Tomorrow is the day! I send a wedding cake 3000 miles across country. Will it make it in one piece? No one knows! LOL Good thing I told them in advance that it probably won't make it. I hope they have a stand by ready. It'll be fun to see if it actually makes it though. It's for my sons Reception. He and his Fiance got married about a month ago but are now having the reception. They just went to the Justice of the Peace. And since I can't be there for everything (I live 3000 miles away), they asked me to make the cake. It's going to be just like the Bridal Shower cake that is in my photos. But instead of having a BC border, I'm going to have a fondant rope border. Plus, my famous chocolate cake should travel well and will keep well. I'm sending it next day air so hopefully everything will go alright.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!!! icon_biggrin.gif

If there is a chance you can get a great deal on a ticket or use a friend or relatives frequent flier miles...I'd do that and suprise them by being there in person. Not too many occassions like this and you could have the cake as a carry on!?!?!

Wishing you and your son and the cake the best...

Happy trails...

This is my plan. The cakes will be covered in Fondant. Then I am going to wrap them well with Saran Wrap. Then I am going to wrap them with Bubble Wrap (the large bubble kind). Then I am going to place them in a box filled with packing peanuts. The fondant bow will be wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in it's own box. Then I am going to place that box inside the larger box covered in packing peanuts. There won't be much shifting room so hopefully it will make it there in one piece. I'll add the directions to putting the cake together. There's not that much to it. I also have some freezer thingies I was going to throw into the box. Not that I will need it because it's already so cold weather wise.

Either way, I will have done what my son requested. As far as me being able to go and take the cake as carry on, I can't afford to do that. I wish I could because it's been almost 4 years since I went back home. I miss everyone terribly.

Sounds like you got the cake packaged securely. I think your son realizes the effort involved in shipping the cake and even if it doesn't make it one piece, I am sure he will appreciate all of the love that you put into this. Best of luck!

UPDATE! UPDATE! UPDATE!

Well I sent the cake off yesterday morning. It's due to arrive in Georgia around 3:00 pm today. The post office didn't sell packing peanuts so I had to stuff more bubble wrap around the cake and on top of it. It was a pretty snug fit and didn't move much when I tried jiggling it. That doesn't mean it won't shift around with all the handling the post office will be doing to it. I'm getting ready to go to sleep now (I worked last night). When I wake up I'll find out about the cake. Then I will update all of you.

For those of you that didn't see the cake before I shipped it, I'll post a pic of it. I'm going to request that my son take a pic of it after it arrives and then I'll post that pic on here as well.

By the way, the total cost for shipping was $90.00 icon_eek.gif !!! The cake was $57.00, the bow was $18.80 (it wouldn't fit in with the cake so had to ship seperately) and the extra bubble wrap that I had to purchase was $2.98 each and I had to buy 4 of them.

Thanks for all the crossed fingers, toes and eyes! icon_biggrin.gif

I hope it makes it. I have a daughter 1700 miles away in San Francisco that is dying for one of my cakes! I would love to ship her one but have been too afraid to do it. I can't wait to see how this turns out!

I have everything that can be crossed, crossed for you and that cake! icon_smile.gif

Yeah if this one ships well then I am going to surprise my daughter with a cake as well. She lives in Hawaii. None of my children have ever tasted any of my cakes. I think it might cost a little bit more though to send her one so maybe hers will be a little one! LOL

That is so beautiful! You sure have a special son and he sure has a special mom! I can't wait to hear how it goes.

What did the post office say when you were stuffing bubble wrap around the cake? icon_lol.gif Was that a first time for them? icon_biggrin.gif

$90 is quite a stiff charge. Too bad you couldn't get round trip air fare for that price icon_wink.gif

Did you have the Saran Wrap against the fondant? I've always wondered if you could do that. I know it's a big "no no" with buttercream.

I wish I felt special. His step-monster has done an excellent job at making me feel worthless and she doesn't even know me! She and my Ex found it necessary to send me an invitation that stated "Mr. and Mrs. So and So request your presence at the wedding of THEIR SON..." My husband peeked through the envelope when it came in and saw what it said and he told me that he almost threw it away because he knew it would upset me. He was right. I just cried and cried and cried.
Anyway, thank you for your lovely words.

The people at the post office didn't seem very surprised. I reckon they've seen all knids of things being shipped before. They were very nice and helpful though icon_smile.gif

Yes I did wrap Saran Wrap around the cake. I made it as tight as I could. I hope it's ok icon_smile.gif

People who know your son will know that "Mr. and Mrs. So and So" is the father and step-monster.

Do you know this lady personally? Think of it as a blessing--maybe in fact she is a nice person and has gone to the extent of making your son a part of her family as well, thus the statement "our son". As you know, whenever you get married, your spouse's children now become your children as well.

I don't think your ex and his wife were trying to belittle you with what was stated on that invitation. I do think that the ex should have included your name and your husband's name on the invitation, but that goes to show how thoughtless they are--as if they were the only ones in your son's life.

Because of distance and finances you were not able to make it to your son's wedding. So? You are still a great mother. The love can be shown in the cake that you made and packaged to him. You are special but don't let a silly invitation or the silly ex's wife make you feel anything less!

Beautiful cake, can't wait to see how well it shipped. My sister lives about that distance from me, I would love to send her a cake for her B-day in April. I sent cakeballs in an egg carton and they did great.

I got a roll of bubble wrap from Wal-mart for 3.98 for 30 feet.

UNBELIEVABLE... THE CAKE MADE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My son just called me and told me that the cake made it and in one piece! The only damage done was to the bow that I had to ship in a seperate box. The bottom of it got a little broken but he said it wasn't noticeable. I am so happy that it made it there. They said it smelled so good that they wanted to eat it now instead of waiting. Now I am very encouraged to send my daughter a cake!!!
I am just sooooooo happy! They are going to take a picture of it and send it to me so I can post it here for everyone to see.

Thank you to all my CC friends for believing in me.

party.gif Woooo Hoooo party.gif Congratulations!!!!

I'm sorry about the invitation. I agree that you and your husband's name should have been on it as well. I'm not exactly sure what etiquette would require. But I, personally, would include all names. Keep your chin up. You made this reception very special and your son and his wife will always be grateful for that thumbs_up.gif
