Am I Crazy For Even Considering This?

DH came home last night and said someone had asked him about me making a 50th bday cake for someone. He laughed it off "haha, she does't really DO cakes for people, haha." I started asking him questions and he looked kind of surprised that I would even consider it, so he said he'd give her our #.

See, the thing is, the only cakes I have done are the ones for class (Wilton 1 only...just finished), a few birthday cakes for my DD, and random cupcakes, etc. (most of them are in My Photos)

Would I be crazy to consider it? It's for this weekend, though...not much time at all! DH didn't know any details except he thought it was a 50th bday and she said something about a "funny" cake...maybe with his belly hanging out or something. I don't know how big she'd want it or anything.

Uggh...on one hand I'd be nervous as I just started making cakes. On the other hand, though, it's an opportunity. WWYD?

I know you are nervous, but do you feel you can do it?? If so, go for it! I can imagine nerves will always be there for the first one for someone else, but if you feel you can pull it off, have some fun! Jen

You can see what she has in mind and then decide if you feel comfortable tackling it. Your cakes so far are really good. I love your Snow White cake. Keep us posted on your decision.

I completely understand what you are feeling. I'm feeling the same way right now. I had someone at work ask for a 3D car cake and I'm making it, but I am so nervous about it. You will never know until you try - and looking at that GORGEOUS Snow White cake you did, I think you can do it!

Keep me posted.

The cakes in your photos look great. But I would, first, see what the person has in mind. If it's something you are familiar with, I'd say go for it.

firstable you should talk to the person to see what she has in mind....the first time I did a cake for someone I didn't know after only making a few for close relatives I was terrified and I only had like 2 days notice, but I went for it and I have to tell you it was the best thing I did cause it gave me confidence and courage to do others , the cake turn out pretty good considering my experience which I told the customer and she was happy too....so I say GO FOR IT here at cc you can get a lot of help......good luck

I am with everyone else, know your limits but if you think you can do something, then you probably can. I usually try new techniques on my family and close friends freebie cakes (like the one I did yesterday....my first FBCT) it didnt turn out perfectly by any means...but I learned a lot and would feel more confident the next time I needed to do it.

OK, I guess I'll see how complicated she wants this first. That is, if she even calls.

2nd...anyone have any ideas for a guy turning 50? DH said she had mentioned something about a guy will his belly hanging out. I'm not sure, though.

How much would you charge (especially considering my "experience")? I don't know details, but say it was an 8 inch round, simple border, maybe a FBCT (which I've never done) on top? The other thing...I'm not licensed. icon_sad.gif I'm planning on it, but never dreamed I'd get asked about doing a cake so soon!

I think you should absolutely find out what they want and then go for it!!! Just one thing....don't undercharge yourself!!! Just because you still new doesn't mean that you aren't good enough to charge for it, otherwise she wouldn't have even been interested in what you could do!!!! GL!!!

Michelle...you're right. I'm just having a hard time coming up with a price knowing I haven't done many cakes before. If she didn't like them, she wouldn't have asked. icon_redface.gif

So, what do you think WOULD be a fair price for a simple 8 inch with a FBCT? (I don't know if that's what she wants or not...I'm just saying...)

check this link out! It has really helped me with my pricing wars in my head! I had my first pay cake about a week and a half ago and I charges her $20. I kind of felt like I should've charged more but like I said before.... icon_cry.gif I don't want to offend... icon_cry.gif You know what I mean?? Just don't do like I did. I know she would've never gotten what I gave her at Walmart but oh well....you live and learn! icon_lol.gif That's the great thing about CC...you can learn from everyone else instead having to live it all yourself!!! thumbs_up.gif

Sorry I got to running off at the mouth!!! LOL icon_lol.gif Sometimes it's hard to stop myself!!! tapedshut.giftapedshut.gif

Price without fbct $25
With fbct $30-$35

If they're comfortable with your level of experience/work, why not? Worth a try. Won't know how it goes unless you go for it!
