I just made my first one yesterday. It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I baked the bottom of the ship in my large oval pan. I needed a large cake. the top of the cake was done in my 10' round which I cut in half. Then I torted those. I put the two halves on each end. Then I carved the front of the ship to a v shape. The back I just rounded out. I iced in chocolate buttercream. The railing were done with candy melts that I done on wax paper and added to the cake at the end, attaching with buttercream. The crows nest I done using a small muffin paper that I painted with the chocolate and attached it with buttercream to one of the dowel rods. Sorry I also used dowels in each end of the ship. I took a ruler and made the plank look. I used chocolate for the ladders also. Hope I explained. Someone else may be able to better explain or have a better way. This way worked good for me.
Very cool cake kaykakes!
I did mine with a stacked 9X13 pan carved and the cut off pieces made the back. I also used chocolate for the railings and wooden kabob sticks for the posts. I used mini peanut butter cups for the crowes nest and chocolate MMF for the planks. My anchor was painted chocolate as well.
Lego pirate guys were my figures.
Next time I would cover the cake in chocolate icing, not vanilla buttercream!
Have fun with the cake!
Tracy
