Hi Everyone. I have a request for a soccer ball cake on top of a sheet cake. I have the soccer ball wilton cake pan that i'm going to use for the soccer cake. My question is what is the proper way to get it on top of the sheet cake w/out it sinking in? Do I just put the soccer ball cake on a board and set it on top of the sheet cake --- or do I need to dowel it?

Hi lori,

You need to put the soccer ball on a board cut to fit and then dowel rod to keep the cake from sinking.

Sprinkle some powdered sugar or cornstarch on the icing where you are going to place the ball to help keep the icing from sticking to the board.

Don't forget to post pictures.

yes, add a board, i use cardboard cut smaller than the base of the ball cake, make sure you dowl UNDERNEATH where the ball will be, to hold it up,,,,i use straws (much easier to cut) then when you put soccer ball on top, add grass to cover where the two cakes meet.
have fun!

You could always do a 1/2 soccer ball. I did a bowling ball cake with the mini ball pan for a bowling ball on a 11x15 sheet pan. It made the bowling ball look 3D. The picture is in my photos. You can't see the 3D effect perfect in the pictures,. but it looked cute I think. You could do the same with the soccer ball, or 1/2 a soccer ball.

I just put the soccer ball on top of the cake with no board underneath. Once you frost and decorate the minimal amount of sinking isn't detectable. You can see a pic of it in my photos.

Dia, can I ask what tip you used for the grass?

Thanks so much everyone!

I just posted a pic of the one I made this fall, and it's similar to Dia's cake above.

I didn't use dowels or a board or anything, just cut a bit off the ball cake so it wouldn't roll, and sat it on the sheet cake after I put a think coat of icing on it.

It may have settled a bit, but just looked more like a soccer ball sitting in grass, LOL!

I used tip 233 for the grass, and did the sides of the sheet cake with a notched thing (don't know the name, sorry) so it would have the vertical stripes on it.

How do you star tip the bottom so that it doesn't look funny? Isn't it hard to get all the way underneath? Or do you do that part before you put it on the other cake?

I have to do one of these in March....need to do my homework. icon_confused.gif

I just did the stars as far as I could reach, and then made some tall grass to cover the edges! icon_biggrin.gif

I don't know if that's the "right" way to do it, but it worked for the cake I made, and the bottom edges of the ball were well hidden.
