Is there a way to get pumpkin flavor without using pumpkin? Canned pumpkin is not sold over here and I want to make a pumpkin roll.
I was thinking that I could use applesauce (the kind that is really, really thick, almost canned pumpkin consistency) in place of pumpkin, but is there anyway to get the (mmmm) pumpkin taste? Most of the gourds in this area would not work to make my own pumpkin puree. Is it a lost cause?
.oO(I've already written Libby's several times requesting that the sell it over here, but they aren't biting.)
Or maybe try adding pumpkin pie spice to the applesauce? Not sure if it would work though...
Pumpkin falvoring will give you more pumpkin flavor than canned "pumpkin" ever will. Especially since most canned pumpkin in the US isn't even Pumpkin, it's other types of squash.
Thanks for your responses!
What do you guys think? If I use the apple compot (really thick unsweetened natural applesauce) with pumpkin pie spices and pumpkin flavoring, do you think the finished product would be similar to a pumpkin roll (or a pumpkin bread or pumpkin muffins if one of those would work better)?
Any ideas?
Are sweet potatoes available there?
I've had sweet potato pies that I thought tasted exactly like pumpkin pies, so that might be an option!
You could use canned ones if you can find them, or just cook and mash fresh ones.
Slejdick, Thanks for that idea! I haven't seen canned ones, but I have seen fresh ones in a few stores here and there. Maybe I will try that with a little pumpkin flavor and spices instead of the apple compot...
