I have a combined surprise birthday party for my worship leader and choir director at my church. They are both turning 30 at the end of January. They are both extremely talented but their ability to play a keyboard is the only talent they share so that is why we chose this instead of a guitar or drum set. I want this cake to be shaped like a keyboard with the buttons on top and of course the keys. I am thinking I will use four 11X15 sheet cakes stacked. I want to use MMF for covering the base and then maybe use pre-packaged fondant for the keys and knobs and buttons. I'm afraid MMF won't shape right for me. I've never moulded anything with it. What about candy clay? Isn't there pre-made candy clay? Would that work?

Any ideas, pics, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. What about any types of tools that would make the job easier, such as rectangled cutters for the keys, or do any of you have a different idea? Thanks everybody. Tarina

How about using quilters templates and tools to get straight lines or shapes n such. Plus on the site here they have a good recipe for candy clay. Just type in "candy clay" into the recipe search bar and it will take you right to the listing for it.

So this recipe says to knead in the color paste, but can you add it to the candy melts after they come out of the microwave?

And what about using this to cover a cake? would it get too hard? probably a dumb question I suppose.

to answer yer first question, well I think you don't want to add coloring to the candy melts because they might sieze especially if you are using liquid coloring, but any coloring with water in it will cause the melts to sieze (curdle) and would make your clay grainy. so yeah knead in the coloring. but you could also add the coloring to the corn syrup instead. I think that would disperse the water enough to not affect the melts. Also they have candy melts in a myriad of colors so you might not have to put any coloring in at all. Unless it's in a small batch the you want to use for accent stuff.
As for the second question, you will probably have to ask someone with a bit more experience but I don't see why not. I would be the same as coveing a cake in chocolate wouldn't it?

Again, DUHHHH, I didn't think about all those different colored candy melts! Have you ever seen any in Black? That would be awesome!
