So my dh's step-mother thinks she is a fabulous cook (and everything else)and you don't dare tell her different. For the good qualities she has cooking/baking IS NOT one of them!! His step-sister's birthday is Christmas day so we celebrate double and her mom always makes a white cake with strawberries and whipped cream icing. I don't dare offer to make it because when it turned out better than hers she would be mad! This year she out did herself. It was burned, I mean black, on one layer, kind of tasted like cardboard and the whipped cream had no sugar added to it. And I had to sit there very politely and eat the whole piece!!!! The things we will do to keep family peace!! ![]()
I feel your pain. I have an obnoxious cousin who thinks because he can BBQ a few different things fairly decently, he can bake or cook anything perfectly. He used to love ANYTHING I made, then as he listened to his Mom get older, and rip on the things she totally went ga ga over previously, he figured he had to do the same. Now no one can out do them. They're practically perfect in their minds... But I digress.
So, what do you do when someone makes something less than good? Grin and bear it. The things we do for family, sometimes.
Oh, I could add that my 6 y.o. cousin got into his grandma's refridgerator last week, where I had a fresh batch of fudge setting up and ate a bit. I asked him what he was doing when I saw the fudge all around his mouth. He said "nothing". I asked him if he liked the fudge, that he didn't eat. "NO! I didn't eat any". When I went to check, there were four pieces missing. I guess after 4 pieces of fudge it wasn't so good anymore.
dodibug,
I can feel your pain ![]()
My aunt (my mother's sister) can't cook not one bit and I hate to basically even look at it let alone eat it ![]()
She thinks without a doubt, that she can cook, I want to tell her so bad that her cooking leaves alot to be desired but my mother asked me not to.
The last time that I ate her cooking it actually made me sick to my stomach and I refuse to eat it again, ever ![]()
I promised my mother not to say anything, but I didn't promise to eat it either ![]()
I'm so glad I'm not the only one!!
Everytime we get ready for a family get together dh and I laugh and wonder what tasteless thing we'll get this time. His step-mom thinks she is an amazing Italian cook but oh goodness! She doesn't even put any spices in it!
I laugh now because I didn't understand why they went out to dinner all the time until I ate her cooking-it's the only way my poor fil can get a meal! I just hate having to hide what I love to do because it really would tick her off-she can be great sometimes but she's also a bit of a nut!! The one dh and I really laugh about is the time she was staying with us after I had my son (I had a pretty good c-section and couldn't drive and our son was a preemie and in the hospital), she made a meatloaf that the top was black and she put potatos and carrots around it soaked in oil-mmmm!!! We just smiled and drowned it in ketchup!
