Hey fellow CC'ers,
I need some critiqueing and advice. My daughter is getting married in August and I am doing the cake as my wedding gift to her. She wants a square cake and we pretty well have the sizes and flavors figured out. I made a cake over the weekend using a Magic Line pan, which by the way I had problems with so I need advice on that. Anyway, I did the cake and was working on the design that she wants. She wants the triangles of dots with a bead border, the same color as a sash that is on her dress, which by the way when I get a swatch of the material I will probably be asking advice on how to achieve the color. She does not want fondant. Any advice on the best way to accomplish a good look with the pattern. Now for the pan, I have never used Magic Line before and I used it for this cake, problem one a big portion of the center of the bottom of the cake stuck to the pan. Problem two, the cake did not bake level. I am attaching a picture of the practice. One view is just the dots, the other has roses which I just did for practice. Please let me know what you think and let me know what I could do to improve the look. BTW the color of the sash on her dress is Peridot.
TIA,
Bradymom
Your dots look great. They only suggestion I might offer would be to use a smaller tip. I find that the smaller the dots are, the more dainty and sophisticated they will look - especially for a wedding cake.
Is she against fondant for anything? It would be hard to do a sash around the cake without fondant. Perhaps you could order some additional material from the dress maker to make the sash... that way the material and color would match if she doesn't want the sash in fondant.
Good luck!
She doesn't want a sash on the cake, the color of the dots and border are going to be the same color as the sash on her dress. Don't let the picture fool you my corners aren't that great. I just posted another thread in the "How Do I" forum to get advice on getting the edges and corners to stay covered. I am having a very difficult time with that. So for the dots, do you think I should follow a set pattern or just do them randomly in random positions on the sides and top?

there are cake embossers that you can use to mark off your cake. so you can keep your dots regularly spaced and sized.
also you can get English tips..they are from PME and do the dots.
HTH
Now for the pan, I have never used Magic Line before and I used it for this cake, problem one a big portion of the center of the bottom of the cake stuck to the pan.
Line the bottom of the pan with parchment paper- no more sticking!
A possible on the hump-How big is the pan and did you use a heating core or flower nail(s)?
I would absolutely follow a pattern and stagger the rows around the cake. I agree with everyone above, too, that they would look better if they were a bit smaller and daintier. Your cake looks fantastic but the larger dots to me seem like more of a party cake than a formal cake.
you did a fab job smoothing your cake and the corners are GREAT! i try to talk all of my customers out of square cakes if at all possible! I HATE CORNERS!
i would say i would ditto what others are saying... smaller tip for smaller dots and with that possibly smaller triangles since the dots will be smaller? as far as the even organized pattern or triangles sort of scattered about, ask your daughter what she has in mind. i prefer things that are not symmetrical so i would scatter and turn the triangles slightly so they are ponting in different directions. now i have to go look up "peridot" since i'm not sure what color family that is!!
Kellie,
You made me LOL. Peridot is August's birthstone color. It's a sort of light lime green. A very pretty color and not as bold as my description sounds.
a ha! I THOUGHT it was green! although i thought a lighter shade of it... it's pretty! your daughter's wedding dress will have a peridot sahs? gorgeous! my dh's cousin had a red sash last summer and the sash was as long as the train of her dress with each of bride and grooms first initials on the tail ends of the sash embroidered in white. it was sweet!
