I know this is a hot topic lately but I couldn't find an answer to my problem in recent posts.
I made Wilton gumpaste from the can. It looks good and feels good - It has set and been finished according to the instructions and stored for about 48 hours before I tried to use it. It is not sticky feeling and initially rolls nice to about 1/8". I then cut it. The trouble is when I thin and ruffle the petals it is tearing - very little stretch to it. Also when it dries it seems to start crumbling. I have been workin for 2 days (about 10 hours of work) trying to make an Iris flower. So far I have manged to create a template that will work but I can't get my gumpaste to cooperate.
Any ideas how I can get it to be more elastic and how to have it stronger when it dries??
I would just go buy some premade gumpaste but our only store in this area (Michael's) has non in stock of course!
TIA
Cindy
I am not sure - wouldn't I end up adding a bunch more powdered sugar if I did that?
I would try kneeding it with some crisco also - that seems to help when mine gets a little dry.

Crisco doesn't work for my trouble. I use it quite liberally but thanks for the suggestion. I might try the glucose but I was just wondering if anyone else had the same troubles with this and possibly found a sure fire solution. I know, I know --- wishful thinking.
I am currently having the same problem. Except making my flowers are very difficult. My gumpaste is way to soft. then when it dries, it crumbles.
I think gumpaste has become a hot topic because Wilton is offering classes. I haven't worked with their gumpaste recipe but have heard many have problems with it. My suggestion would be to try making Nic Lodge's recipe or Scott Clark Woolleys, I think you will see and feel a big difference. It always puzzles me that a company known world wide and with as much money as they must be taking in, a company like Wilton would put out inferior products? I can only think that money is the name of the game, if it sells then it doesn't matter if the quality is awful and the customers are having problems with it.
ShirleyW -- Do you know where I can purchase Tylose powder or gum taraganth. I haven't been able to find it here. The only cake decorating supplier we have here is Michael's. Can I find it in other types of stores? By the way - thank you for the info you sent me on the flower.
Cindy
If your local supply store does not carry tylose, ask them to get it in. There are only 12 to a box, and it has a long shelf life, so it won't hurt them to get some in.

Good Morning Cindy - I ordered my Tylose from www.cakesbysam.com. cost was $3.99 for 2 ozs. I also ordered Pixie Dust, which I love, for $5.49. Shipping was very prompt but the price of around $7.00 for everything a tad high considering the weight of the package but what's a mother to do...
Check the different sites for Tylose, some are less than others, but then they may charge more for shipping to your area. I use Confectionary Arts Tylose from Kerekes, and Global Sugar Arts. Maybe CC store would consider carrying it, as well as some gumpaste tools???? ![]()

I've never used the Wilton gumpaste from a can. Would you please list the ingredients for us? It seems like there is either something missing, or something is in there that should not be.
Thanks!

I don't have the can anymore so I can't list the ingredients. I ended up kneading in a tsp of Wilton's GumTex along with crisco to keep it supple which seems to have helped but I think I may have to add a bit more yet. I was able to construct and ruffle all my petals this time but I am still having trouble with assembly of the flower. I am going to order tylose for future use but I don't have time for this cake. I think I might just choose a different flower to go with my roses. If I can't get this batch to work I will just -- sob -- go with good old royal icing flowers. I do like royal icing flowers they just don't match the image I have in my head for this cake.
