My sister is studying in London this semester, and my parents are going next week to visit her. I thought about making a cake for them to take to her, but how easy or practical is it to fly with a cake. Especially since it's not just a short flight. I'm guessing total time from when they leave for the airport until they arrive in London might be as long as 12 hours.

Also, the icing would be IMBC. Would would that be ok do you think? Would it be better to freeze the cake, and have them take it straight out of the freezer? I've never frozen a decorated cake before!

Thanks!

flying internationally you likely cannot bring anything that isn't commercially packaged, as there is a risk of bringing contaminants in with the cake. I know that is true for a lot of different types of food, and I would assume it applies to home baked goods as well. Not to mention it would count as a carryon, and the UK in particular is VERY strict about the number, size, and type of carry on allowed. I wouldn't do it, in this case.

Could you make some rice krispies treats, cookies, or something like that , that you could put in a large zip top bag and put in their checked luggage? You won't be able to decorate it, but I am sure your sister will understand.

the same thing applies - you usually are not supposed to bring anything that wasn't packaged commerically (meaning you can't even bring fruit and veg (unless bought and shipped from a cleared grower), much less homemade goodies). You can try, but if you get searched it more than likely will get taken away from you.

As a frequent flyer back to UK, I can confirm that NO foodstuffs whatsoever can be taken on board. The only food/drinks allowed have to have been bought once you have gone through Customs.
