to do a tiered cake with a 12 inch square and a 10 inch square?? I have to make a cake to serve 100, and according to the serving charts, I could do 12,10 and 8 inch rounds, or 12 and 10 inch squares. I've never done a three-tiered cake before, so that is making me nervous!! I think the customer will want something long written on the top of the cake, so that will help fill in the space on the 10 inch square. Or do you think such large square cakes and only two tiers will look weird??

thanks!

I think it would look okay, kinda sorta. For a cake serving 100, at a wedding, I'd really recommend a 3 tier. You could do a 6 inch square tier for the top, and that could be the anniversary tier for the couple to save.
I'm just thinking that a large square 2 tier cake would look a little bit like a sheet cake, which is not what you are going for, I'm sure. Are there going to be flowers or anything else decorating the cake?

I made a large two teir cake and really regretted it once I put it together. I feel making three smaller tiers just looks better. But that is just my opion. I think what makes the cake is the embellishments - it will make or break any tiered cake. Mine was that they wanted flowers on the top and it was not size appropriate. Hope it helps.

thanks for your opinions...I know you're right icon_cool.gif It is for a wedding shower in my husband's office. There will be chocolate shells decorating the cake. I think I will have to suck it up and do the three tier...but I will be freaking out since I will have to construct it all at home. thumbsdown.gif

I agree that I think it would look better if it were 3 tiers. It really isnt any more difficult than doing 2 tiers really. You will be fine!

As long as you put dowels in the bottom two tiers, it will be fine. You make it exactly the same as a two tier cake. It is not any more difficult to transport than a two tier either. You can do it!
