I am having a wedding cake made, I'm not ready to try it myself, it has a ribbon around the base of each layer, and will have buttercream icing. What type of ribbon can be used that will not look "greasy" from the buttercream soaking in?

If you iron it between wax paper it helps. I try to stick with darker colors or I buy non-stick from my local cake supply store.

They actually make grease proof ribbon just for cakes? I had no idea. What does the wax paper do when you iron it? Does it transfer the wax onto the ribbon without actually adhereing to it? I'm glad this question was asked, I've always wondered.

I pregrease all my ribbons with crisco before I place them on the cake. Keep in mind that pregreasing may deepen the ribbon's color (although I have not had that happen to me).
Pregreasing also makes the ribbon adhere to its ends so you should not need to use frosting or RI.

Thanks for the tip, Tug. Do you pregrease when using it on fondant as well?
