I made my first batch of gumpaste and it worked out really well. i used the recipe on the back of the wilton glucose container. However, when i tried making roses i realized it was really soft and didn't harden like the premade wilton gumpaste. I have to add a petal and wait like 5 minutes. the petals droop so i turn the rose upside down and walk away for a little bit. Is there anything i can do? maybe add some more powdered sugar?

I am new to gumpaste myself, and I used the same recipe and had the same results you did when I first tried it. After experimenting a little, I tried adding some corn starch until I got a stiffer consistency and it worked out really well for me. I don't know if that's how the experts do it, but it worked for me! HTH

You have to let it sit for at least eight hours or over night to cure before using it thumbs_up.gif

I do let it sit overnight before using it too. When making it I add 3 cup of sugar, next day I add the remaining cup. If I do not add the extra cup the GP is really soft.
Hope this helps.

I let it sit overnight and added the other cup of powdered sugar. Still to soft. Its OKAY to work with but it takes forever to dry

letting it rest over night is really good, and most people do add extra sugar or corn starch if it won't stiffen. I usually make the Wilton RI, then add Tylose powder to it, let it rest over night, and it works great! I think you can get the recipe out of the Colette books or Kerry Vincent, but it might also be online, can't remember for sure, but it's around.

Hmm, funny, I had a problem using that recipe too (but no problem when using the actual mix). My gumpaste is really "gummy", like a stick of gum . I have to turn mine upside down too. I have tried a number of things, but I wonder if there is something the recipe is not including.

get away from the wilton stuff. there are recipes out there from toba garrett, scott clark wooley, nicolas lodge, etc. that are VERY good, easy to make, and much better than wilton.

I teach for Wilton, and I don't use their mixes either! I do use their pre-made stuff when I'm in a hurry bc I can get it quickly, but I prefer to make my own with the Tylose and it's cheaper and comes out great. Good luck!
