I know this has been talked about before but I couldn't search for the answer I was looking for. What do you roll your pumpkin rolls in? I hate using towel, its a mess and I dont feel very santitary. I know someone has said they use foil, tryed that and it was a mess. I think it acted as a heat conductor and turned it to mush. What do you use? Thanks in advance for all your wonderful suggestions!
I went to the dollar tree store and bought a couple of thin woven cotton towels that I use only for rolling cakes and occasionally for drying noodles on.
A clean towel is as clean as my hands (which I dry on a clean towel after washing), so it's as sanitary as I'm going to get, and I think much easier than trying to use something else to roll.
hth!
Laura.
Unfortunately I think you are going to get a mess no matter what due to the amount of powdered sugar you need to use in order to prevent sticking. I think in the original pumpkin roll thread someone did mention that preferred to use parchment paper to roll up and that they were able to re-use the paper for other rolls as well. Personally I have tried both and like the tea-towel method best as it seemed to absorb some of the steam from the roll without that 'mushiness'. The parchment was okay but seemed to hold in the heat more. Either way I still had powdered sugar everywhere. Rolls were worth it though, they are so so good!
I use the parchment paper covered in powdered sugar. Although I do let mine cool for about 3-4 minutes before I flip it onto the parchment paper. I tried it both ways: flipping right away and letting it cool a bit first. Flipping right away causes it to stick. Letting it cool a few minutes - I have absolutely no sticking!
I don't think there is any way to avoid the powdered sugar explosion in your kitchen though...
I do one of two things and neither are very messy. 1) when you take it out of the pan double flip it so that you are icing it right side up. or 2) when you bake just line your pan with parchment paper. Then you just take it right out cool and fill. When you roll it, it comes right up off the paper...no mess at all.
