Hi! Just a question on what people thought or how they get around this. I was watching a couple of shows on food network and they were making and selling items that Im sure have a copy right. Example: Recipe for Sucess had a lady that had started a cookie business and she made Harry potter cookies. And on Ace of cakes--- the king kong cake. Just wondering. I worked at a bakery growing up and they would never do anything like these do to copy right laws and the possiblity to get sued. Just wondering if things have loosened up or if people just arent aware?

I think maybe they've loosened up for the mosr part except for Disney; I know they're still super strict on their copy right stuff especially Mickey Mouse stuff. Either that or they don't seem to mind it.

I think so too Reenie. Loosened up that is. Seems like the music industry is the big copyright story because of the internet. Good for us cake and cookie people!

I just noticed you are from Artesia, NM. I lived there as a child for a few years and attended ABO Elementary School, the underground school I will never forget, then junior high for a year before moving to Texas. Is it still there and open as a school? It was back in the 60's when I was a student there. We have driven through Artesia a few times headed up to Ruidoso from Lubbock but have never gone by the old schools.

I'm not 100% sure, but if I remember correctly, the Harry Potter cookies were things like eyeglasses and lightning bolts? They weren't actually copyrighted images, although they were in the theme of Harry Potter. Similarly, the "King Kong" cake was just...a big gorilla. The owners of the King Kong copyright don't own the rights on all big gorillas, just like the owners of Harry Potter can't prohibit people from making lightning bolt cookies. If it were actual copyrighted characters, like Mickey Mouse, SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, then I think there would be a difference.

Anyone who is more informed on the subject is welcome to step in and correct me. icon_smile.gif

I still think that they may have bought rights to use them too... who knows...I would think if you are on tv and a big decorator that you are asking for trouble if you don't so you stay clean...... icon_confused.gif:
