Repeat Gripe About Posting Comments For Pictures
Decorating By sweetcreation Updated 22 Dec 2005 , 3:49am by finally928
I know that this post has been made before. It has just gotten to me lately, because still being a newbie to decorating, I am encouraged by the comments I receive on cakes I have done. That is what I loved about this site when I came to it. I am encouraged by how many views I get, so I know that users are looking at my submitted photos. I know that it was mentioned that if you really want comments to post your picture on a forum, but that isn't something I want to do everytime.
Anyway, I recently posted the following cupcake cake and received a comment. I know that people generally only look at photos that have recently been posted, but when I see that a cake that is similar to mine in theme, posted after mine, receives a lot a comments, I feel a little discouraged. Of course, I get wonderful compliments from those who actually see it and from my family, so I really shouldn't be complaining.
Okay. There is my grip. Thank you to all who have inspired me with my cake decorating. I really have appreciated the wonderful resource of Cake Central and the comments that I have received from Cake Central users and will continue to post here. I just had to spill my feelings.
It is just that I came to Cake Central to gather insight and creative ideas. Almost every cake I have made has been inspired by someone who has previously submitted their creative cake.
I have had the same result at times not just with my picture posts but also with my forum posts too. But I haven't worried about it. I might not be on here enough and might not make enough comments myself. Can't say why this happens. I am proud of all of my cakes too.
I really like your tree cake. I haven't done a CCC yet either, but I want to. Don't get discouraged. Right now is such a busy time for everybody. I know I am really busy.
Thank you for your comments firegal79 and gma1956.
I believe I was just caught in the moment of frustration about the number of comments I see on other people's cakes. I do get very positive and encouraging comments from the customers, friends, and mainly family. Much better to come from the people I know than those I don't, I guess.
Everyone here is a cake enthusiast so I just wanted to feel encouraged a little more often than not.
I learned about cupcake cakes from this site. It is about interlocking the cupcakes so that you can frost them like you would a cake. Also, the article suggests filling the cupcakes with frosting, I guess so that there is more frosting, like a layered cake. The challenge, I have noticed, is getting a level surface. As it is said, Practice makes perfect.
Happy cake decorating to you!
I think a lot has to do with time zones and when pictures are posted. Some times are busier here than others. I posted (what I believe to be) a very pretty Gingerbread House and only got a couple of comments about it but I just figured it was due to the time I posted it. Or some people saw it and just didn't think it was special enough to comment on. Either way it doesn't bother me. It's a nice Gingerbread House and I know it. That's all that really matters. Yeah it would be nice to get more comments on it but what are ya gonna do?
SweetCreation, I know how you feel some people get tons of responses while others don't. But I know that Idon't always post comments to things, so I don't let it get to me much. I have only posted one cake on here and it is my son's wedding cake that I made in August. I only got 2 responses, but they where possitive responses. I know the picture wasn't the greatest but I thought that it turned out very nice in person, and everyone there at the reception loved it.
I just got out some old pictures of wedding cakes that I have made in the past and the photography wasn't that good so I don't think that I will be posting them but maybe. One was a wedding cake that I made for a food show when I was in High School, and I won first place. and a trophy, it was in '77 and that cake was so 70's.
I just looked at your photo's, and all of your cakes are very, very nice. And your CCC is great. It looks so cute. And I love how you decorated it.

You also have to consider that some people don't get to see your picture but they might get to see the other one. I try and look at all the uploads but there are times I miss some of them because I'm not on here all the time -- like on the weekends.
I think the number of members online at the time you post a pic plays a part too. I agree with gma1956 about forum posts also. Sometimes I feel like I'm being overlooked. But, then I feel like that in my own home too! LOL
Just adding on that if you really want to make sure that people are seeing a specific cake, you could always post a pic of it in the forums.
If I do a cake that I'm "really" proud of, then I will post it in the forum. If I'm not particularly thrilled with my result-it goes straight to the gallery (like the soccer ball cake--couldn't quite get those balls right--but it was a freebie, so who cares! lol!).
I usually look at cakes but don't always have time to post. It's just a really busy time of the year at the moment.
FWIW, I LOVE your Christmas tree CCC! Very cute idea!
Lisa
I think your CCC is great! Don't get down about the # of comments you get on any particular cake.
As stated, I too believe that sometimes it is the time you post that is a problem. When there are a lot of new posts, sometimes there are just too many to comment on them all!
I think everyone on here deserves a pat on the back for their creations. I have been inspired by so many new ideas on here, I simply don't have the time to comment on each and evey one that I love!
I agree that alot has to do with timing. For some reason I don't go back and look thru the picture posts for the day so I usually end up only getting to comment about the ones I see on the home page. One great thing i like to use for the posts is to view all the posts since my last visit and all unanswered posts (there is a link at the top right in the forums main page) and that helps me catch up and maybe even answer a question if I can that got overlooked earlier. Remember if your question went unanswered earlier in the day bump it up later in the day, then it will appear on the homepage again and someone who knows an answer might see it!!
Well, #1, your CCC is awesome. I
m way too scared to attempt that as a newbie as well..do you keep the cupcakes in the wrapper or take them off..is that a stupid question? LOL..
#2 - I've seen well established decorators (and you can tell by the cake they've made WOW) that don't get any comments. Just yesterday I was browsing through the entire birthday cake gallery, and found such well done cakes, with no comments posted! I posted on some of them..but I don't always have the time to do it.
Another factor may be a slower internet connection. I remember when I had dial-up, I would view the pictures and go back, I just couldn't sit and wait for the comment to post..so a lot of people may still have dial-up, and in which case, I believe thats why most don't most comments..
I was just looking through my saved photos, and I have your "1st Birthday" cake saved in there, because I love it..but I didn't leave a comment. So just because people don't leave comments, doesn't mean they don't think your cake ROCKS...
I hope I helped some!
Robyn
That is a very clever cake. I wish I saw it before my office party. It would have been perfect. Good job!
You really shouldn't worry. Your cakes are Great, I doubt you need anyone to tell you that. I have put cakes on with no comments at all. But I know someday someone will do a search for an idea and one of mine may pop up, so that will make me feel good. If I could help with someones cake plan as much as I look for help on here for mine it's worth it. Doing a search, I found cakes posted a year ago that were just what I was looking for. Don't stop what makes you feel good for ANY reason.
sweetcreation,
I just looked at all your cakes and they are rocking.
We have all felt your pain before ![]()
Thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate all your comments. The timing point is accurate, as I am in Japan and with the users in the states the time zone difference is 14 to 17 hours. So when I am awake, most everyone is asleep or about to be and vice versa.
I am proud of my creations and what I have done so far as a newbie. Plus, I do love looking at the cakes here and I don't always comment on other peoples cakes.
By the way, RaRaRobyn, the cupcakes stay in the wrapper, so that you can just pull apart the cake one cupcake at a time.
Thanks again for posting your comments.
Iam sorry you are having such feelings, everyone loves everyones cakes here. I think it is a very busy time for everyone. I know I have been buried all month, and I don't hardly get a chance to get on! Maybe once in the morning.
I looked at all of your cakes they are wonderful and I especially love the christmas tree!
Just keep up the great work, and know you are appreciated!
Connie
yeah i hear ya ,but some of mine when i post them and see it on here i wish i would of just kept it to myself. because i always see someone elses that looks so prefect and way better!!! you have some wonderful cakes ! dont worrie im sure everyone loves them.

sweet creation: I have the same gripe. In fact, I started a thread very similar to this a month or two ago, and it got a huge debate going. I think that if people are going to take time to view a picture, then at least respond with one or two words. My feelings get hurt easily too. No one can possibly respond to all of them, but eveyrone can do a few, especially to the new people. ![]()
Gorgeous job on the cupcake tree!! yummy
I hear you all....so easy to see how many times your pics have been viewed and how few comments have been left. And as a former newbie, the feedback and encouragement when new is VERY important. and if I may say with the ability to do the emoticons (one click) at least people could do that!
(now to get a camera so I can post more pics)
I try to always post a comment on the pics I look at. I need to look more often...sometimes I just look at them from the preview on the side especially if I am in a rush. I get nervous about posting my pics as well....everyone here is so talented!!
Berta
Your cakes are great!! I know people need positive feedback from time to time...but if I respond to every cake I see on this website my family would get ignored. If you love what you do why do you depend on comments to from others to determine your mood. I do take the time to look at every cake on here..and sometimes I never post a comment even if the cake looks great ...I only comment to a really different or amazing cake that I have not seen or think that I couldn't do myself.
Don't get discouraged just do your thang!!!
After reading the original post, I am wondering if it's the fact that you didn't get a lot of responses or that someone did a similar cake and did get responses? Those might be two totally different things. I agree with everyone here when I say that it's tough to review all the cakes but I try to post something to the ones I have time to post on. I look at them all but since we are all busy with real life, most with kids and more, and making cakes of our own, it's tough to do that for each and every cake. The best recognition comes from those that actually see and taste the cake if you ask me. A cake can look great but if it tastes like a cardboard box..LOL!
I say just keep decorating and posting. I've seen a lot of really nice cakes with no replies and some that aren't so great with no replies. Of course feedback is useful and helps but I'm sure its not intentional. It's just people being busy and doing their own thing too.
Tilisha & Caribou I second that.
This VERY SAME topic caused a HUGE debate the last time.
I feel you can not comment on each and every cake. ( and I know some are going to say you don't have to comment on every cake but be mindful of the newbies) I comment on something that catches my eye or that I really like. Somethimes I am not even looking at that persons status to "know I Have to comment" There are tons and tons of cakes on this site with no comments at all. If everyone who did not get a response wrote about it we will be reading more about no comments left more than cakes. I should not feel forced to comment on a picture.
If you have a problem and need support you know people are here for you. I think that is the most important thing.
I spend hours on this site and that is mostly just reading or looking at pictures. If I had to comment on everything I would not have time for anything else. We all have lives, kids, work.
I don't feel you should be that easily discouraged or your feelings should be hurt.
sweetcreations ...
I know exactly how you feel ... I have posted cakes on here and have received no comments, and have posted other cakes and received a few. I also wait for the day when one of my cakes wows everyone and i receive TONS of responses!!!
However, I am also aware that I'll have to wait a while for that ...
I would like to explain why "I" don't often leave comments on photos. I only got my DSL connection 2 days ago (christmas gift to myself and my daughter). Someone else mentioned the Dial Up delay, and i can vouch for that as well. Secondarily, though, is that i often search the galleries for ideas, etc during my lunch hour at work. Since I'm short on time, I don't have much time to go back and leave a comment.
I'm very sensitive about my cakes as well and wish that everyone thought they were awesome ... but I've also realized that as long as I am happy with them, maybe it doesn't matter that no one commented ...
Though -- I wish I could say that someone may have "borrowed" one of my ideas!!! Nothing I do is that original ... you should feel flattered!! ![]()
