For an upcoming wedding I am providing a rented cake stand in the price of my cake. If the rental company charges me a deposit, would it be appropriate to charge the bride a deposit as well? I'm afraid that I may not get it back if I don't. Has anyone dealt with this situation?

I own all my cake stands and generally just have a rental charge on them, but if I were renting the stand I definitely would pass on the deposit fee to the customer, just for the fact you stated...security and protection for you. You could explain this to your client and they would get the $ back when the stand is returned.

OF COURSE you should have a deposit. ESPECIALLY since they aren't your cake stands. Ask for a check in the amount of the deposit and when you get it back you will just void it and give them back their check or shred it.

Yes, I would charge them the deposit. Just to be safe.
