Well, I knocked over the cupcakes that I made in the new Wilton shaped silicone molds, I didn't make the Pricess crown with the fondant that I added the gum tex to so when I went to pick it up it broke.

But, I have the PINK BANDANA MADNESS cake done, all I have to do is the package bow that goes on top...if I can figure out how to use Melissa's mold.

The mermaid topper needs her Clam throne and her shell bra. I'm going to stick brown sugar all over the 6" cake and have the pearls overflowing the clam..then the bottom tier will be decorated as the sea...I have all the shells, fish and starfish already made.

I have a set of shoes to go with the crown..I also made a BOY crown..after all there use to be only BarMitzvah...and now the girls get BatMitzvahs ...so..I decided to also have something for the boys!

I'll post pictures of the show ..

I really shouldn' t be doing these cakes...I should just be true to my vision, there is really NO space in my shop to be doing tiered cakes..I have them outside my door..in the hallway of the spa

aaaaaaaaargh..I just realized that I do not have any up to date photos of tired cakes to show these girls!

What was I thinking! icon_redface.gif

I know this sounds like a dumb questions, but is Quinceanera for the girls version of the barmitzvah?

It's actually a hispanic custom for a girl's 15th birthday. Most families and girls consider it to be more important than a wedding.. I think it's most akin to a Debutante ball, only it's focused on only one girl. Fancy ballgowns, cake, bands, dancing.. just a huge crazy party.

My three half-mexican cousins all had ones and I went to them.. I thought they were neat but kind of odd I think to anyone who's not used to the custom, heh!

Risque Business,
I have a question? How to you avoid the dark colours bleeding into your pink on this cake?
Oh gorgeous cake by the way. I thought it was very bright.
Do you seal the BC with edible lacquer?
Please let me know. I have been looking on the site for days now trying to find an answer and/or correction to colour bleeds?
Thanks
Claire

omg,
quincenera's are a really big deal. It's like a turning out ball. It signifies that the girl is now of age and is available for marriage. It's also for the family to show off how "rich" they are. You know, the bigger the better to attract a mate for your daughter thing.
I know it's kinda archaic but dang it's big business for caterers and decorators.

well if you look closely, my cake is really a mess..but actually..at this point I"m so stressed and tired I DON"T CARE..lol

I used an edible chalk and the first min that I saw it was making a mess I should've just used the edible black pen.

Everytime I touched the cake to move it or moved the stencil I smudged the chalk.

I didn't use buttercream the cake is covered with fondant it so cried for me to use the edible pen! ugh..live and learn.

I thought I had a bright idea and used dry chalk...I used to stencil with the gel colors and a little alchohol and dip a make up sponge..lol..

That's what I get for having bright ideas! lol

It is a really big thing!! it's like the Spanish version of a Sweet 16 and if you watch MTV you can see HOW big of a deal THAT is!

Yes, it used to be that the young girl was "presented" to society and announced that she was of "marriageable age"..in other words...let the suiters begin to vie for they young woman...especially if they were rich or "connected' lol

The problem is that since I'm a "ONE MAN " show I'm totally unprepared to run with the big dogs, I don't have ANY display cakes done...and these display cakes have to be like..10x more than a wedding cake...in fru fru , height and such.

I decided to keep mine smaller and simpler and more 'themie"..lol after all I'm sure that NOT all the parents have "UNLIMITED" budgets for their daughter's party.

But, I don't think so...500 hundred girls are coming and they are even treated to "A day of beauty" at the Eden Roc resort.

I'm soooooooooooooo out of my element...I don't have any business cards ( ordered some for the hotel without my naughty website..they didn't show up yet) I don't have time now to go to OFFICE MAX to get them done, or KINKO'S to get some type of brochure done..I can't afford it now..spent over 600 bucks on this event! ugh..

This is what I get for trying to go out of my element, I should just stick to naughty cakes..lol

I would drop out , but am afraid that if I'm the only baker invited that it will look bad.. icon_cry.gif

Oh risque hun,
It doesn't matter if the family has to eat canned beans for the next five years after financing their dd's quince.
It's always, "the bigger the better"
And on your samples if you could throw in some 3milks cakes with fresh fruit that's always good too.
But then you will be in mostly cuban and puerto rican community. Whereas where I am it's mostly mexican. They might have a different traditional cake to serve.
Here it's def the three milks cakes with fresh strawberries or peaches and some even have kiwis.

p.s. hun why don't you just go n get some cardstock for biz cards and make yer own on yer puter. MS word has some cute templates.

Down here..it's all about the look..Remember Miami? it's one of the most SHALLOWEST places to live. I could serve them a cake that taste like carboard, but if I'm a cake 'STAR" they will come flocking.

In other words...Have big name or am known. I'm hoping if I keep my displays away from those big Castle cakes and fantasy cakes like MTV SWEET 16 shows that if I get those girls with families that are looking for something smaller.

My place is really to small to even consider doing wedding cakes, so I wasn' t doing them....WHY DID I AGREE TO DO THIS.....lol

I think I shot myself in the foot!

Sorry this is so stressful for you. I hope you get tons of business from this and it is good for business. I know that using other people's cake photos without permission is a big fat no no BUT you seem like you have lots of wonderful friends on this site - if you got thier permission to use pictures of cakes you knew you could do and gave them credit for it maybe you could bring along a few with you to show the girls as an example? Just a thought. I know other people's pics is a sensitive subject but as long as you weren't passing them off as your own and got permission -might work out.

You are so right on that one! I do my best work under pressure...but I feel like I'm out of my league on this one..not talent wise just "OTHERWISE"..lol

I KNOW what this show is looking for and I'm just not giving it to them and that is part of my stress.

well, let me stop witching and moaning and back to my shop! I should've been there at 7 am

but once again , my room mate woke me at 3:30 am...

When I was in HS one gal wore here Quinceanera dress to Prom.. icon_eek.gificon_eek.gif It was a WOW! dress for the time and everyone was commenting on how beautiful it was especially knowing the family wasn't made of $$$... Her Mom had made it.. When we were in Vegas on vacation there was a gal celebrating it there (is that like eloping for it???).. The dresses are WAY fancier than what they would have for a wedding gown even, just no train.

If you look through the Wilton books at some of the cakes, it's basically still 80's overpiping inferno for the style for those unfamiliar with Quinceanera cakes. They even celebrate it with a blessing at church in spanish culture. I still remember the look when I walked in from the ENTIRE congregation there, as they were doing the blessing for the gal celebrating her Quinceanera, even she and the priest looked back with the collective "what in the world is a WHITE CHICK doing here????" icon_confused.gificon_confused.gificon_confused.gif .. icon_surprised.gificon_surprised.gif It's a HUGE deal to them just as a Bar or Bat Mitzvah is in Jewish culture.

Oh Risque, remember, they're more fun than dealing with a bridezilla any day of the week... With Quinceanera, it's the more everything the better, with brides it's always "I just want something simple(ultra-expensive) and I only want to spend $150 to feed my 300 guests".. At least with these, they're realistic that they're going to have to fork over some funds...
