Yes, my dd requested a "normal cake" for her birthday. No barbie cake. No fondant. "Mommy, can I just have white frosting and Happy Birthday in pink?" What really tickles me is that I don't make any grand cakes. I guess she got nervous by all the pics I look at on the board and thought she'd end up with a cake shaped like a Pez dispenser or something. 
At least she didn't ask me to buy her cake from the grocery store.
Now THAT's funny!! Maybe she sees all the hard work you put into a cake and she doesn't want you to go through all that for her. How sweet....!
Nah, my dd is very sensitive. I'm sure she got worried that I'd make some giant Pez dispenser cake and the other kids would say, "Ugh! What's that?! Why didn't your mom get you a REAL cake?" She probably figures that if no one elses cake has a barbie sticking in it or fondant bows, then those are not good things.
I'll have to buy some candy to put on it. I don't think I can handle a naked bday cake.
Does your dd watch Arthur? The little girl on that show wanted her dad to make her a "normal" cake-he's a chef and always does weird things.
My dd's on the other hand want me to go crazy decorating their cakes LOL.

I have a 16 year old daughter and she looked at me a couple of years ago, and said "Mom, I don't want to hurt your feelings, but I just don't like your cakes anymore." Thats when I realized that my girls had been taste testers for too long. now we get whatever they want even if it is a store bought cake !!! just goes to show how tolerable our families are with us and our baking.

DD still wants a scratch cake and frosting. She loves meringue buttercreams.

That's very cute, maybe she should decorate it herself, she'd love that!
Here is the cake. Everyone thought it tasted fabulous. One teacher even said, "I'm not usually big cake fan, but this is delicious." I think the best part was when dd's teacher explained to a child what is meant by "scratch cake." The child was very happy as he is allergic to peanuts and normally can not eat birthday cakes.

One lesson learned: There should be a law against chocolate cake covered with white icing. I don't like cake with a lot of frosting (people just scrape it off anyway) and I stopped at 3 thin layers of frosting. I decided the chocolate specks gave the cake character. 
I would love to see the picture when you are able to upload it. It was also nice that the kid with the alergies could eat it.
