What are his hobbies, favorite books or shows?
Once you have that stuff do searches on it in the gallery, there are tons of good ideas for men.

What are his hobbies? or what does he like to do?

You could always make a theme cake based on those answers.

I would find out at a minimum what flavor cake he likes....If no information is available I'd go with chocolate cake, chocolate frosting and a raspberry filling, choc, roses, choc leaves and choc shell border and pipe Happy Birthday.

Do look in the galleries. There are many good ideas. I like the look of chocolate ganache, with a piped design on it.

I just did a cake for a gentleman's 40th ... will post photos perhaps tonight. Cake was very modern/futuristic looking while being quite gender- and age-appropriate. Would work for any man.

Most guys don't want anything too frilly. I just did one that was chocolate with chocolate frosting. Simple shell border and white chocolate swirls and writing. He loved it. Taste is probably the biggest thing.

Check out my gallery; I just posted a cake for a gentleman's 40th birthday. It was tricky to try and come up with something for a man (flowers just weren't going to do the trick). He loved it.
