I was looking at several books and I was wondering if they were worth getting. The Cake Doctor, The Chocolate Cake Doctor and The Cupcake Doctor. I also wan't to get a book from Colette Peters - Cakes to Dream on (I think - about topsy turvy cakes) And does anyone know if it tells you how to construct the cakes.

Thank You icon_rolleyes.gif

I have that collette peters book and it is good. It has directions but her's aren't always really indepth. It gives you the general idea very well. I really like her books for inspiration and technique ideas as well as good color combos.

I have the Cakes to Dream on Book. There is a one page explanation on constructing a crooked cake. It has two figures on it, but I don't think it is in depth enough if you've never done one. There is a tutorial here on CC that explains it a little better (in my opinion).

The book is fun to look at and get ideas from and has some yummy recipes as well.

You may check your library first for some of these books. Then you can look through them at your leisure and decide which ones to get first.

HTH!

I have the cake mix doctor and it's great, but I would suggest checking it out at the library once just to see if you like it before investing in it!

Cakes to dream on... I am afraid I may be the only human on this website to say this, but I wasn't that impressed by the book. She is a great talent, etc. but I find that a lot of the time, the books aren't her prettiest cakes. Sometimes they are just too ornate for my taste. They don't seem like something I would want to eat. They are amazing sculptures though! And they really don't tell you how to make the cake. It's kind of assuming that you already know all the techniques, etc. and just need to know which way to put it all together!

I don't think your the only one Melvira! I use the Colette books as inspiration in bits and pieces....a pearl string from here...some piping here....they are treated more like art books in my house!

I don't know the others - but Colette's books is WONDERFUL - I wouldn't be decorating without it. her cakes are stunning and gave me so many ideas for my own designs. It does tell you how to construct cakes - they're not all wonky ones though. Just stunning - can't recommend it highly enough. And as for not wanting to eat them - who cares? They're so stunning I;d be fending people off eating them so I could look at them longer.

I know what you mean Emmascakes, but to me the cake should look like something you want to eat because that is it's whole purpose. I am not remotely disparaging her talent... if I had one tenth of it I would be amazed! But for example... the cake she did on the wedding cake competition, that was beautiful AND looked like you'd want to eat it. Those are the types of cakes I love the most!
