Silly question, but is there silver coloring to make silver buttercream icing?
The Michaels craft store where I live is closing it's location (next closest one is about 35 minutes away, I'm so bummed about it!)
The only way to get silver icing is to use luster dust. There's a recipe on a thread here somewhere with the recipe. I believe it calls for piping gel, luster dust, lemon extract & maybe some powdered sugar. If you want a lot, like to cover a whole cake, you'd need to spray it on because it's so expensive.
I can't seem to find the luster dust recipe ---- can anyone help? Need silver icing to write lettering on a wedding cake.
I know this was posted a long time ago, but I've been searching for information on this. If I want to spray a cake iced in buttercream with silver luster dust, do I need to mix the luster dust with vodka first and use that in my airbrush, or doeas the luster dust go straight into the airbrush?
Mix your dust with some vodka or clear extract (like lemon). Then it can go in your airbrush.
I do the same as karateka, but make sure that it is really thinned out so you don't clog up the airbrush and then rinse really well when you are done so it doesn't dry inside the needle.
If you just need a little bit of silver, you could always do your detail work in royal icing and then when it is dry, combine some luster and vodka and gently paint it on top of the royal. I've even used a really soft brush and painted right on the buttercream for details/accents.
Good Luck!
