Okay I was at a friends last night...And for some reason we got into the debate about icing...He said butter cream is so much better...As how it looks...I thought different...So I'm curious what you all think...I love the way fondant looks on cakes...
I love the look of fondant and the taste because I make mine. Sometimes buttercream looks better. It really depends on the the cake. 3-D animals definitely look better with buttercream. Some birthday cakes and even some wedding cakes look better with buttercream.
As always, the type of icing really depends on the design and many times the price. ![]()

I am new to cake decorating. Will probably be more of a hobby. But will do a little of it from time to time on the job. I work in a grocery bakery. They have a cake decorator. But sometimes we get orders when she is not there. And occasionally I will be the only one there.
As for the icing. I have never used fondant. Only buttercream. Bought a box of fondant to play with. But haven't had time yet.

Before trying and using the icing that I decorate with now, I would've said it didn't matter what you used to cover the cake. (I wasn't much of a cake eater.) Now, I definitely love the buttercream. I love the look of fondant, but don't want to eat it. (Or charge extra for something I won't eat!)
I agree with GeminiRJ. But I LOVE the way that fondant looks.....
All my cakes are covered in fondant. I attended an evening course and they only taught fondant (sugarpaste). Most people eat the icing because it is what they are used to. I made MMF once which turned out ok but when time is short it is back to fondant.
I always use fondant for my cakes because thats what I was taught in my class. Buttercream isn't as big over here in Australia. I also think fondant is easier to work with IMO.
I love fondant! Obviously not the pre-packaged stuff but MMF. I put lots of BC under it and have had several people say it tastes sooo good!
I also love the way it looks so smooth and easy to make into fun shapes and colors. It is just more fun for me.
Diane.
