I have two 6 month old male kittens. They're from the same litter and just as sweet as can be. They have one really WEIRD habit...one kitten tries to nurse on the other. icon_eek.gif They're both fine with it, and will lie there suckling until I break it up. I don't know their history, so I'm sure this is some carryover from maybe their mother not being around or whatever, but it just downright DISTURBS me! Anyone seen this before? Will they outgrow it? I don't know why it bothers me so much, but it really gets under my skin.

That just makes me laugh. That has to be funny to see. I think it would bother me too. I don't know why, but it would.

We had a cat that nursed off his mother when he was bigger than she was. She had a second litter when he was about 5 months and he would push the kittens out of the way to get to her and she would let him and clean him. icon_confused.gif

icon_lol.gif I laugh cause my cat is 11 years old & it still "nurses" on my fingers icon_confused.gificon_rolleyes.gif . He did not have a mother cat (he was abandoned) to nurse on, so the lady who "raised" him bottle fed him til I took him home with me at 6 months. My mother is DISTURBED by it, but I could care less.

I think your kittens will grow out of it. & I can understand how you feel. My cat does the STRANGEST things. He loves water icon_confused.gif Yep a cat that loves water.

Monica, your post reminded me that when my 11 year old cat was a kitten she used to nurse on our earlobes. She was abandoned, too.
One of the kittens also likes to lay on my pillow at night, put a paw on either side of my head, like he's grabbing my head and 'groom' me, licking my hair. I kind of take that as a compliment, since he usually does it after I've been petting him, like he's returning the favor. icon_lol.gif
Ah well, I guess you can't be a cat lover without appreciating their little quirks. icon_rolleyes.gif

LOL yes each pet has their own quirks.
Now I have fish, but ours have their quirks too. We have a tiger-striped oscar that will only eat the chichlid pellets that are really expensive, apparently they must taste better. Whenever it's feeding time I shake the bag in front of the tank and he gets really excited and he starts wriggling his body around. Now if I hold the bag over the top of the water he will jump up and bite the bag, if I would let him but I don't anymore. I used to have a male betta that would literally jump out of the water for food, it was the coolest thing to see, sadly he died.

icon_surprised.gif No kidding? My cat does the same thing on the pillow right beside me. He sleeps there ALL night. He rests his paw in my hand & I sleep like that all night. He startes off my sleeping on my chest then moves to the pillow about an hour later. I can NOT goto sleep with out him 1/2 ft away. I had SPOILED him & he has spoiled me.

Yea you can not be a cat lover & not just love there quirks. I do anyway. THats what makes him brighten my day.

Thats such a neat story. Thank you for sharing. I did not know that fish did things like that icon_lol.gificon_rolleyes.gif

That's cool, Mouse, I had no idea fish would express their personalities like that!

Monica, I have three cats and they all race to my bed to be the first to lay on my chest and get petted! That one kitten is the only one who sleeps on my pillow, though, the other two lay at the foot of the bed.

mbelgard, sounds like mama cat had a favorite! LOL

I miss having cats. After I moved out of my mothers house I didn't get a cat because I knew I couldn't afford one and ever since then we have lived in places where we can't have cats or dogs.
I would love to have a Mainecoon cat, my SIL has one and he is very very patient with her two little boys. My husband wants one to eat the bugs up in our house- we find centipedes and stuff every once in awhile.

My cat doesn't nurse but he certainly drools. He was grabbing bits of blanket in his mouth. Now, He has two stuffed animals that are as large as he is. He drags them around the house and even to bed. He gets them and holds them by a limb or ear and stomps them with all 4 feet in a rhythmic way while purring and drooling on them. We have screened in porches and I have to watch him, he tries to drag his friends out there and they get too dirty. Sometimes, he drags them together and tries to stomp both of them at one time. He really gets in trouble when he tries to get the older 18 year old cat involved, she will have none of this foolishness.

Our 2 7 month old kittens were abandoned as well, and we bottle fed them, they are more people than cat. The little boy in particular if you are sitting down, is in my DH arms and nursing the inside crook of his arm, weird yes, but a fairly common behavior, especially in kittens raised early by people. Sparky is also lactose intolerat??? Can't keep him out of the kids cereal bowls, then he pays for it, and so do I, with the cleanup. icon_razz.gif

I used to work at a Humane Society and we had cats do that all the time as well as nurse on earlobes and one male cat was even returned because...uh....lets just say he liked to "nurse" on himself. ; P

When one of my cats was little it used to try to nurse on my dog. The dog was so good about it and would just lay there and not even growl. Then I would come into the room and save the poor dog. My other cat is just nuts and loves to sit up on the top of the bathroom door. When you go to the bathroom in my house you have to check the door first to make sure there is not a cat on it.

LOL!! icon_biggrin.gif
I'll give my little guys credit, neither one has tried to nurse on my older cat (which would be more appropriate, since she is at least a female). She just barely tolerates them now, I think we'd have a serious fight on our hands!! All three will groom each other now, so I think we're on our way to a peaceful feline family. For a while, I was nervous about leaving the house, not sure if our older cat would kill the kittens while I was gone! icon_eek.gif We did a 'kitten check' as soon as we got home!

Most older cats will tolerate kittens until they hit about a year old, then the older cats think that the kitten should no better by now and will not be so lenient on them. This happened with my former kitty (had to give him away) and my mom's kitty (rest in peace). My black cat Samuel Whiskers (named from a beatrix potter story) would pick on my mom's cat alot for some reason, Samuel was a shelter kitty so I'm not sure if he ever was socialized properly. My mom's cat Tigger tolerated until he was a year old and then she wasn't nice to him, she would fight back. Thankfully blood was never drawn, helps that both cats were declawed in the front paws (only).

Squeaky (our older cat) was always the 'youngest'. We got her when we had a year old cat. Our oldest cat died about 2 years ago and we were getting worried about Squeaky getting lonely, so we got the kittens (Mac and Cheese). Of course, that's ironic, since she wouldn't come near me or the kittens for about a month after I brought them home. She's finally coming around, though. Funny, though, I took them to the vet to be declawed and neutered, and they were gone for two days. When they came back, we had to go through the whole readjustment process again, apparently Squeaky thought they were gone for good! No real fights, but lots of hissing going on. The kittens are determined to be friends with Squeaky, and I think she's given in. Especially since Cheese is now as big as she is, I guess she knows when she's beat!

LOL Monica!
I love cat stories, too. They are such peculiar animals!
When Mac & Cheese were declawed we had to use shredded paper instead of litter in the litter boxes for 2 weeks. Squeaky was so mad, she pooped on my bathmat every day. I got so tired of cleaning it up and washing the bathmat, I finally just picked it up and declared to my family that I would put it back when we got litter again. The next day, Squeaky made her point. She peed on my scale. Thank goodness I saw it before I stepped on!!

Sparky & Oreo love the water, DH likes to take baths after work to relax, can't count the # of times he has yelled at me to come and retrieve a cat that has fallen in the tub with him, you think they would learn, kinda funny but DH doesn't think so, he has started locking the door.

LOL, what a hoot!! Cats are the most weird of pets but I love them anyway! My 14 year-old sibling cats were brought to me, hissing and clawing the air when an old boyfriend found them next to their dead mama's body by the side of the road. I raised them and they are definately my cats, even though they will tolerate my DH, they HATE my DS and small kids. Even at 14 they will both "pad" at my DS's stuffed animals or any pillows that are laying around. They've never tried nursing off of anyone or anything. I did have a small kitten as a child that would try to nurse off of my eyelids!! That was pretty gross when I'd wake from a dead sleep to find her doing that!!

icon_surprised.gif shame kitty. icon_lol.gif

Well when I got max I had to use that shredded paper too tapedshut.gif Well I had A HUGE black bag of it in the extra room. I had already put it n his box. Guess where he poos & pees? ON THE BAG. thumbsdown.gif

I felt bad for him. SO I went to the Petsmart to see if they has anything else. Well I bought this "pressed organic, something, paper" VERY expensive. So he used it for the two weeks. I felt so bad for him that I did NOT punish him. icon_cry.gif His paws were hurting. icon_cry.gif I cried for a week straight.

I think it hurt me more than it hurt him. icon_rolleyes.gif

I will NEVER go thru that again icon_cry.gif ever.........

My mom stepped on her cat's paws accidentally after she had her front claws removed. You know how cats always seem to stand right behind you where you CAN'T seem them? Well, that what Tigger did, stood right behind my mom and my mom didn't know she was there. My mom took a step back and stepped right on her front paw, poor kitty, my mom felt so bad.
My cat that I had- Samuel- when my mom first saw him at the Humane Society he looked right at her and started meowing really loudly as if to say "GET ME OUT OF HERE NOW!!! TAKE ME HOME!!" and was crawling up the cage door. Well after we brought him home, he didn't meow for almost a month after that. He would go to meow but nothing would come out, or you would only hear a little squeak come out. One of my mom's friends tried to give him "meowing" lessons, it was so funny to watch. She would hold him up right in front of her face and meow to him and he would try to meow back and sometimes nothing came out and sometimes a little squeak came out. Eventually he started to meow like normal, but it was like his little voicebox overworked itself when he was trying to get my mom's attention.
