I'm making my first real tiered cake for feb 28th and I'm having a hard time deciding what size pans to use. Its going to be a 3 tiered "wedding" style cake. Its actually for a suprise 50th birthday. It only needs to feed 50 people but that doesn't matter much. I plan on having cake boxes so everyone can take some home. I was think of using 12, 10 & 8 inch. but with the 8 inch being on top it looks incomplete to me. like there should be another smaller tier. so maybe a 10, 8, 6. but is that gonna look to small? SO........ I really like the way this cake looks. Can any of you tell me what size cake pan you think it is:

These are a 4 inch difference, so whatever size you want to start out on, just keep stepping it up 4 in.

It looks to me like they have to be at least 3 inches different but I think it looks like 4.
On a 2 inch difference cake there isn't that much room around the layers.

I think it might be 6, 10, 14. I have two cakes in my photos with these measurements - my first communion cake and yellow baby shower cake. HTH

Wow - do you really think it could be like a 14, 10, and 6? That's a lot of cake for an anniversary, but I agree with the ones who said it almost has to be 3-4 inches to have that much extra room around the sides. It just doesn't look that big. Maybe it's the picture, or I guess it could be my eyes - LOL.

Why don't you grab your 6,8,9,10 and 12 inch pans and put them together like a tiered cake and work out which looks most like the photo to you? Try the 12, 9 and 6, in a stack and compare, and then the 10, 8 and 6, see which one works best for you.
It's hard to tell from the photo, but I would take a guess at 12, 9, 6 it looks a bit like a 1.5 inch difference all the way around which would be right if the pans were 3 inches in difference, but it could be a 2 inch differential as well. I doubt that it's 4 though.

I agree with cmmom. I think that it looks like 6-10-14. I have these size pans at home. I will try to take a picture of the 6-10-14 and 6-9-12 to give you an idea of what it looks like.

Okay, I am home now. I took pictures of the 6-10-14 and the 6-9-12. Please forgive the lip on the 9" pan. I could've sworn that I had a 9" pan, but could not find it!! icon_redface.gif

I hope that this helps you to decide without having to go to the store again! icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks vickitilghman! That was so nice of you to do that. I think I might go with the 6/9/12. I just have to get a 9 inch pan. I was even at a.c. moore the other day looking at 9 inch pans. All of their cake pans were 50% off.

daniellemhv, I'm not sure if you did your cake yet. Last night I did a cake that was 6, 8, 10 inches and I took a picture for you to see. With a border, it looks like your original picture had more room on each layer. I still think the cake that you want should be 6, 10, 14. Take a look and see what you think. (I hope this works, this is the first time I'm trying to attach a pic)
