I am currently on my second course class three. I have a problem withthe way my teacher is showing us how to do things. I totally understand that the book is just a guide and that the pictures are just that pictures. But the things we learn in class are suppose to atleast look like what the books look like, RIGHT? For example we learned the daisy tonight adn she told us that the daisy is suppose to have petals that are NOT flat! After about three tries and I finally figured it out how to get my daisy to look like a real daisy. My question is what would you do if you took a class and your flowers and what not didnt look like what they are suppose too? THis is not the first time this has happend either. a few us have asked and she said that is how you do it. Can anyone hwlp me understand this method? Is this just her way of teaching? If so I think it is the easy way out. I know we don't pay alot for the class and she doesn't make that much for m the class either but I wan to know how to do these things right and looking the way they should.
I think your items should come out at least close to the pictures. I know Wilton wants things taught a specific way. When I was in course 2, I was making my roses a little differently than what was in the book. I thought they looked fine and so did my instructor but she said she had to teach me the Wilton way and if I chose to do them differently outside of class then that was fine. She didn't say this in any sort of a mean way. She just meant that since she was a Wilton instructor, she had to teach it the Wilton way. Don't know if this will help your situation but at least maybe give you another point of view.
I guess I feel really discouraged after tonights class. I wasn't able to make the rose as I did in BC. I was only able to make the daisy the RIGHT way adn the pansies! See that is what I don't understand is that I know from reading here about how in the classes it is all about the "wilton way", well I have to say this teacher isnt teaching the "wilton way!" Well I have a week before my last class I guess I will start practicing tomorrow on what we learned. I just find her ways of teaching are NOT up to par! TOTALLY DISCOURAGED tonight! I don't even feel like signing up for course three!
I'm a Wilton instructor, and while we are instructed to teach the Wilton way, if I have a student who isn't catching on I have no problem giving him or her what I call a "bad habit" method. I think most seasoned instructors realize there is more than one way to do something and we'd rather the student love decorating than get discouraged and quit. I have 3 ways to do a daisy; the Wilton way, my grandmother's way (she was a professional cake artist ) and one that a student from way back made hers when she couldn't figure out the Wilton way. They all look pretty, and frankly no one is going to c/o about how you made the daisy when they admire your cakes. Take it all with a grain of salt. This time next year you'll be making awesome daisies and roses and everything else because you'll have practiced and made cakes numerous times. Have fun with the course, that's how you come to love the art!!!
