What method is used for 'painting' on fondant? I mean, do you use food colouring, the icing gels?...do you thin them down or should they be used right out of the bottle or if it is a gel, right out of the little jar?

I'm going to try my hand at making MMF tomorrow and I thought maybe painting the cake would be nice...

TIA

You can just water down some gel colors. If you want more vibrant colors you can use a clear flovoring extract or some kind of alchol (ie gin, clear rum, etc..)

Have fun!

Use a small medicine cup-sized container, some gel paste, and alcohol (good extracts, vodka, etc). DO NOT use generic vanilla extract, as it is water based and beads up on the fondant. You can use directly from the jar, and it will be thick like oil colors. Thin a little for acrylic texture, or thin a lot for watercolor effects. You could even try mixing in a touch of luster dust for shimmer.

I paint with petal dust, luster dust, and nontoxic artist chalk mixed with a tiny bit of vodka. You can also do brush embroidery with RI and crusting buttercream icing. Brush embroidery gives you a textured look.

to paint on a darker base you can mix the colors with bright white. works great!
