I have finished class 1 and looked on the schedule for what is coming up next at our craft store.
Like I said, class 1 was just completed. Now they are offering class 3! What happened to class 2? Has math changed so much that we now count 1, 3, 2? I talked to my instructor and she said I could go ahead and take 3 and do 2 later? ![]()
Is this normal? Am I going to be lost in 3 without taking 2?
I have deocrated cakes for friends and family for several years, but I really needed to learn the right way to make some of the flowers and fancier borders...
What do you all think? I have never worked with gumpaste or fondant. I have done tiered cakes but they were very small...
I usually tell my students to take the classes in order since in course 2 we do not make buttercream icing to show and in course 3 we do not show again how to make buttercream and royal icing. Not sure why she is having course 3 instaed on 2 . I guess she has her reasons.
Course 2 you learn alot of different flower techinques with royal icing, basketweave and some color flow. I don't think you would have a problem taking course three first and then course 2. I am just finishing course 4 and I am thinking about doing the masters course in a few months. Keep up the good work! ![]()

fmcmulle--If you take the masters course at Wilton in May--I'll see you there!
Wilton Course I, II, and III follow in succession. The Fondant and Gumpaste Course is not to be considered Course IV. It can be taken by anyone with little or no experience. I'm a Wilton Instructor and we were told that you do not have to take all three Wilton classes in order to take the Fondant and Gumpaste Course. I instruct at Hobby Lobby and we are to offer a Course I every month and alternate the other three courses on a monthly basis (II, III and starting in May, the Fondant and Gumpaste Course). So, for example, in May we would offer I and Fondant and Gumpaste, in June we would offer I and II, in July we would offer I and III and then start over again with the same rotation in August. Some instructors may offer more than two classes a month, some stores have more than one instructor and thus, offer more classes.
The best thing to do is talk to your local craft store or see if you can get the instructors phone number and talk to the instructor to see what the class schedule is going to be.
As a teacher I offer Course 2 and 3 on an every other month basis as my store can't give me more classroom time at present due to previous commitments. Check to see if that is the case there. Per Wilton, students should be taking the courses in order 1,2, and 3. The new class isn't Course 4, as people seem to keep calling it. You are only required to take Course 1 before taking the new gumpaste class.
Our store has a morning instructor and an evening instructor.
We offer course 1 and then alternate between courses 2 and 3 and we Now also offer the Fondant/Gumpaste course.
I work at michaels so we pick our own days to have class.
After course 1 the other courses are able to be taken out of order and you don't miss anything because each class is different.
Our Michael's also alternates between course 2 and 3 each month. Not as many people sign up for the continuing courses, so they are offered every-other month. Check to see if that's what's going on at your store. You could probably do Course 3 without doing 2 first, but I liked taking mine in order.
The only think in C3 that you may have problems with is the Royal icing, which you learn how to make/use in C2. Other than that there is something in C2 that you have to have for C3.
She may only offer the classes every other month because she can only teach so many days a week. Also some stores have to have a min number of students and they may teach every other month so they have enough students signed up.
Contact the instructor and ask her questions. Find out if she has had students take the classes out of order and if they have had any problems. You can also ask her if she shows how to make the royal icing in C3 for those students that have not had C2 yet.
I prefer my students have C1 before C2 because we do build on things learned in the first course, but I don't think I would have a problem with a student doing C3 before C2.
