We are having a neighborhood get together and my mom is making southern style food for everyone because we living in minnesota and she is from georiga and most of the people around here have never had real southern cooking. I'm trying to think of an idea for a cake decoration that would match the night. I use mostly sugarpast for decorating so if anyone has any ideas that would be awesome

Make a cake that looks like a cut watermelon. That's pretty southern.

Georgia girl here, you can make magnolias, yellow jasmine, a live oak covered in moss... lot of neat things available.

Oh, and please tell me you are also serving shrimp and grits

I lived in Georgia when I was very young. I remember peaches and pine trees and red clay roads and very happy people. Ahhhh! The memories. Sorry not any help for your cake, but sure would love to know what's on that menu.

Well, believe it or not, pound cake is very traditionally southern... you could make a pound cake in a bundt pan, have a white "glaze" flowing over the sides, and add beautiful magnolia or peach blossoms!

Wow... made me hungry this morning, that sure would be good with coffee!

Quoting Lana: "Oh, and please tell me you are also serving shrimp and grits" - YES! And cornbread and collard greens too!

Take care "Dah'lin" icon_wink.gif

Oh, and I don't even know what I was thinking when I failed to mention kudzo. You could decorate that bad boy wth kudzu growing up over the sides. (even sugar imitations of kudzu would probably grow over night)

Red Velvet is a southern cake and there is a a great recipe on this site. Do a search for Sarah's Red Velvet Cake. Very moist and very easy to make.

I'm not a Southerner nor have I ever seen the plant, but it gets mentioned a lot by Southern writers. It is as, I understand, a green menace that is almost impossible to kill. http://www.alabamatv.org/kudzu/

It is kind of funny to read about it.

The Kudzu here is unbelievable! There's a place on the highway right down my hill where the trees (hundred years old or more) are COVERED by it.

They pronounce it "cutsyou" because if you wander into it--it does just that! It will cut you like corn. And--if you find a vine as a kid in the hot summer and you've got time to sit and stare at it, YOU CAN LITERALLY SEE IT GROWING!!! (Especially after a good rain!)

What about Dogwood blossoms on the cake? That'd be pretty. Or some bbq'd ribs as a cake? icon_smile.gif

We say it kud zoo. It can grow up tp a foot a day. Its crazy stuff. If you're not up for making cake, a good old banana pudding is a southern delight!

The person who can figure out how to make kudzu into a delicacy or fuel source will be wealthy beyond all imagining. We used to "watch" it grow by placing markers on the ground and checking on it every two hours. What else are you going to do in the summer when you're a kid and don't have cable or video games?

What about a pineapple upside cake, black walnut cake or coconut cake? They both are very southern.

What about something that incorporates the saying, "Hey, Y'all" into it?

And I completely agree with LanaC--yep!

I'm a southern gal, born and raised in Northwest Florida.
A hummingbird cake, coconut cake, pinepple upside down, or Lane cake are all good ole fashion Southern cakes in my area. You could decorate with Magnolias, Wisteria, or azaleas all Southern flowers. Maybe add a Hummingbird to the top, that is what I do with my hummingbird cake !
Also if she's cooking southern don't forget the turnip greens and cornbread !lol

OK, I was born and raised here in the south, but "Lane Cake" I don't know what that is. Can you explain, please?

Parable, Lane cake is a cake that has nuts, raisins, coconut, and some people put pineapple in it. The filling is cooked on the stove and it also has the same ingredients in it. Good cake but kinda sweet.

Oooh, being a georgia girl myself I think magnolia or dogwoods from Sugarpaste would be lovely. Or some sugerpaste peaches rolled in sugar.

Pound cake, hummingbird cake, red velvet, coconut cake were always favorites at out house...cobblers too, but I don't think they go well with frosting.

Good luck,

Julia
