We just have our first grandchild last Friday. He is sooooooo sweeeeeeet! But I don't know what I want to be called. My DH wants to be PawPaw because that is what our kids called his dad. But I don't think I want to be MawMaw. I just turned 50 last month and I don't feel like a MawMaw. Do ya'll have any suggestions? I know most of ya'll are just now having your children. What do they call your moms and MIL's. Or what do you call your grandmothers? Please help! Everyone keeps asking me what he will call me.

cakeladydi,

Congrats on your first icon_biggrin.gif

My two oldest grandchildren call me Grandma Stephanie; my third calls me Grandma Stephie and the fourth one turned two this month and doesn't call me anything yet icon_lol.gif

We called my mother's mother Mamma(we loved her) and my father's mother Grandma...we didn't like her much icon_biggrin.gif

What did your kids call their grandparents? My mom tried to make our kids call her "Gram", but they never took to it. My friends mom is called Nonie. My kids all say it in their own way, but it is some kind of Grandma. It really was whatever they could say. I know others that use Nanna.

My son has a Grammy and Papaw, A Grandma and a Grandpa Cale. Kind of funny, I am with Stephanie, the Grammy and Papaw are held in much higher regard icon_lol.gificon_surprised.gif

But you know no matter what you want to be called, kids have a way of figuring it out for themselves. I had an Aunt Martha, but to me she will always be Aunt Monkey!! And she would not have it any other way.

My grandchildren call me Grandma Shirley, or just grandma. My daughter is now a grandmother and she asked that the children call her Nana. I have friends who's children call their grandparents Grammy and Grampy , which I thought was kind of cute. My son inlaw is a big, tough sounding guy with the sensitivity of a kitten. His grandchild calls him Grumpa, because he looks like he is grumpy, actually he isn't. Now that she is getting older, she's has started called him Pop Pop, but Melissa is still Nana. The one that has always grated against my nerves is MeeMaw and PeePaw, just don't care for it.

The above posters are right, the kids will figure it out! My mom and dad are Nana and Papa, and my in laws are Granny and Poppa. My dad always wanted to be Grandpa, but the grandkids wouldn't go for it. I have a neice that started calling me "Bubble" when she was tiny, and she's 11 now and no one has any idea where it came from, but she's still calling me "Bubble" LOL

Congratulations on your new grandbaby!

When my son was born we called my parents Granny and Grandpa but my son has changed it to Ganny and PeePaw and my nephew calls my dad Bubba. My husband's parents are Grandma and Papa to my son but one of my nephew's calls my MIL MeeMaw.

I agree with NEWTODECORATING thoug. It doesn't always matter what you want to be called. Kids will often come up with their own name for you. My mom's name is Pam but for some reason my cousin called her Aunt Bobby when she was young. My cousins are now in their 30's and 40's but still call my mom Aunt Bobby instead of Aunt Pam.

Pick a name you like - Grandma, Granny, Gran, Grammy, Gram, etc and then see what your grandson calls you when he starts to talk. Enjoy your new little one!

My older brother was the first grandchild on my mother's side, and he couldn't say Grandpa and Grandma real well when he first started talking, so he called them Papa and Pama. All the grandkids called them that, and even some adult relatives and neighbors did, too!

Thank ya'll for all the suggestions. I know he will probably figure something out for himself but until then I'm just undecided.
My oldest daughter thinks it should be Gammy but I think i kinda like "alip" idea of Gran.
Anyway I guess it doesn't really matter what he calls me as long as he calls me.
Did I mention that he is sooooooo sweeeeeet!
Thanks to all of ya'll.

I always called my Grandparents "Grandma and Grandpa" EXCEPT for my Grandmother on my Father's side.

She's Gram to all of us ^_^

My cousin's call one of my Grandmother's "Nana" and "Gi-gi" (Jee-jee). I don't get along with that grandmother though so I don't usually call her anything but Punky (her name).

Kids will usually make their own names, I wouldn't worry.

When my daughter started talking she called my parents Mama and Papa Katie...as Katie was their dog's name and that's how she differentiated all the grandparents! LOL My MIL was Mama Dusty (for her cat) and my FIL and his wife were Mama and Papa Jake (for their dog). She still calls them all by these names. My son is just turning 2 and he calls me Mama...so he calls my mom Mima and my dad Papa. He doesn't call the rest of the grandparents anything because they're never around anymore. He also calls his sister his "deedee" and the babysitter is his "mimi". Don't know where they come up with these things! LOL

LOL this reminds me of my cousin. She calls her grandma's... Grandma with the truck, grandma with the big hair, Grandma with the car. LOL I get a kick out of it everytime I hear her say it.

I called all of my Grandparents Grandma and Grandpa when I was around them.... if there were multiples I either added their first or last name. Or if I was talking about them when they weren't around... I was never consistent with the first or last name though. But growing up I had grandparents, great grandparents and Great great grandparents (when i was really young) So I had to add names just so I didnt' get confused!

My older kid called my mother "Mom" for quite a while. My mom watched her while I worked fulltime, my much younger lil brothers and sisters were there and called her "mom" all day long, so my kid too called her Mom!

Made us all laugh...she called me Mommy and her Mom. She grew out of it and now calls her Grandma, my dad is Grandpa.

Her other grandparents she refers to as Great-Grandma "insert last name" and Grandpa "insert last name"...she doesn't see them very often though.

They'll call you what they want to. I'm "Ma". Never thought I'd be called that, I wanted to be called Nana or something cute. But with your grandchildren, whatever they call you is fine! I like it now (on the third grandchild). It's much more personal and less formal than what they call their other grandmother, which is Grandma Sherry. I like just being "Ma". My DIL's nephew calls his father's grandparents "Dad's Parents" even to their face - that's their names. So Ma is good.

My Nana became "Granna" when she had her first Great-Granchild. My own great-grandma was "Big Nana" . . . and I have a Gramma and my step-grandma was Grammy. My moms 50 as well and she can't wait to be either Nana or Nannie . . . she says its gramma-ish without sounding like she belongs to the "Blue Hair Club" as we call it . . . icon_smile.gif

Congrats on being a Grandma for the first time . . .

Can't believe I forgot about this-
When my son was about 2, he all of a sudden started calling my mother "Coco". We would tell him, "No, that's Gramma", and he would say, "No, that's Coco!" The only reason we could come up with for this sudden name change was that we were joking around one day and my mother said something funny, and I told my son, "Gramma's cuckoo" and he thought that I said Coco and that that was her new name. Who knows, but we still call her that sometimes and he's almost 19 now.

KatieTaylor77: It's funny that you have a Big Nana. When my grandmother had her first great grandchild (my oldest daughter) we called her Big Momma. Not that she was big or anything. But that was the first thing I told my family that I could be called ANYTHING but BIG MOMMA. Of course they all think it is funny and call me that anyway.

Congrats! I can not wait till I get to ask the same question. If I have my way, I would like to be called Grams. My dh wants to be Papa Smurf. LOL That's right. He has always loved that little blue wise man. Just realize that no matter what, the first grandchild usually sets the tone for the rest of the grandchildren to come. The worst one I have ever heard is my brother's name that he chose for himself, GRUMPY. (Yuck) It's is his constant state of mind however so it fits.

I wanted to put my 2 cense in...I am a Nonna, we already had 2 Nanna's and I am VERY young to have grandbabies (29, I married into them, but they are still sooooo much fun) so it is close to Donna (my name) and my friends mother is a Memaw. I just love that one.

My son and I call our Grandparents MomMom and PopPop ~ always have ~
it's funny when my son was little it was mummum and pop - that kinda stuck - but I called my Dad "Pop" too.

My Mom (MomMom) loved it when my son called her Mom and me "Val" ~ he always heard me call her Mom and she call me Val so that's what he said as well. It was funny I have to admit - this little thing yelling Balllllll.....

Somehow I got to talking to my dad on this subject, and when I was little even though I spoke very well, I refused to call my brother anything but Dabu. His name is David, but I always called him Dabu. I remember one time when I was like 12 I randomly called him that and he laughed, but I don't know where it came from, haha. I wish I could remember what was going through my head when I decided to call him that at two years old!

My little cousin calls me "My cuz" because she kept hearing our other cousin call me "My cousin". And she couldn't say cousin. It's so cute to hear it though even though she talks perfectly fine now, it all runs together and sounds like "Micas" but it's stuck. For a really long time she called her sister Ashee, and she called herself "Edycas" instead of Erica. Oh, and instead of saying "I'm sorry" she'd say "Silly Bear" or "Oh Bother." She thought it all meant the same, LOL

I love little kids. icon_biggrin.gif

Congratulations on becoming a grandma!!! Sometimes the kids just find their own name to call you. I didn't have a lot of grandparents so mine were just grandma & grandpa. When my daughter had her baby at age 20, I was at first in shock about being called a grandma icon_eek.gif But once I held that little sweetie in my arms, I was immediately excited to be a grandma and decided that grandmas can still be young & hot, LOL! My grandson is now 2 1/2 and for a long time he's called me "am-ma" which is precious to me. I've never heard anyone called that before, which makes it even more special. Last weekend they were here visiting, (and he's been going to daycare for a year now) he is now calling me "grandma". Awwwww, I was sooo happy to be "am-ma" that I'm a little sad that he's growing up icon_sad.gif By the end of the weekend I had taught him my name, so now he asks me over & over "what's your name" and when I say "Carol", he smiles and says "MY grandma cawol".

I dont' understand those who think it's gramma who gets to decide what she is called. When the kid starts talking, they will call you whatever comes out of their mouth.

My granddaughter couldn't say gramma, so somehow it came out "Banna". She actually named our cookie side of the business when mommy asked her if she wanted french fries from McDonalds and she said, "No.....I want Banna's Cookies!" (Ahhhhhh! I won out over McDonalds'!!!!)

Thus the company name was born!

(And I'm with another person earlier .... what the heck is a PEE-PAW????? But I'm sure there are those out there who wonder what the heck a Banna is, too!) thumbs_up.gif
