I keep getting this crazy requests for cakes. Do you think it is possible to use the pre-packaged chocolate pudding as a filling for a cake? If so do you think I need to add anything to it to firm it up or not? Any help would be great, thanks.

I think it would work. If your not sure you could try it out at home and see how it goes. I defenately would not over fill it.

Maybe you could look into some recipes for Bavarian Cream....it's a pudding filling that I think tends to be thicker. It's easy to make and you can make different flavors. I use this as a filling alot.

I use them all the time. The little snack size chocolate pudding that is sold on the shelf, not in the fridge. Each one is about 1/2 a cup which is enough to fill an 8" cake. Tastes great too!

I made a cake for my mom using pre-packaged chocolate pudding as a filling. I didn't get to try it myself, but my mom described it as "delicious". Her other description was "verrry moist". I prepared the pudding per directions on package. I wonder if it would work better just to use a bit less milk?

I just wanted to clarify - I used the boxed instant pudding mix that you have to add milk to.

My Wilton instructor used it for the cake she made in our first class. She says she uses it all the time. HTH

I use the box pudding mix also - but instead of using 2 cups of milk, I only use 1.5 cups. Accidentally used 1 cup one time and had a very thick yummy filling!

I have used it in the past also. The one thing I can say is it's best to use on a cake that will be eaten right away, because the longer it sits the more the pudding soaks into the cake and eventually you are left with a very moist cake (not a problem) but the filling is mostly gone! Very yummy though! thumbs_up.gif

Another great way to use boxed pudding mix is to whip it with 2 cups heavy whipping cream, makes a great "mousse!" I do that with the cheesecake pudding mix and wow is it great!!
I have also used the pre-packaged pudding, the vanilla with added sliced fresh strawberries is fantastic! Just don't use too much and chill well!

I fully agree with what tbittner said..............definitely use whipping cream with the pudding instead of milk - so yummy and holds up well.

so does adding the chocolate pudding mix (1 pkg?) to 2 cups of heavy cream and then whipping it, make a nice thick chocolate filling?
does that soak into the cake?

It makes a great filling, very mousse like. It will not soak into the cake. I just made a strawberry cheesecake filling like that last night for my WASC cake. I whipped the cheesecake mix and heavy whipping cream all up and added a bit of Strawberry preserves-yum!
It really holds it's shape well but remember you do need to keep it chilled!

tthardy78, I use the snack pack pudding and add the instant pudding dry mix to the snack pack to make it thicker. Its really Yummy. So my recipe is 3 vanilla snack pack puddings then 1/2 package vanilla instant dry mix, stir it up really good. Ive used this for years! Kind of like a thick custard texture. Good luck!

I have used the vanilla pudding mix with less milk also and it turned out well. It does make the cake even more moist!
