Only One Pan, Can Batter Sit?

This is probably a ridiculous question, but I've run into this problem before...
I am making a butterfly cake using a heart shaped pan for the wings. My problem is that I only have one pan. Can the cake batter sit while I bake / cool/ release each layer? Should I refrigerate it? Or, should I just suck it up and buy three more pans?
Thanks!
katie
I also have this problem. If it takes a while for the process. I will cover my bowl with foil, put it in the fridge. When I take the cake out of the pan to cool cpmletly, i take the batter out of the fridge to allow it to come to room temp. Hope this makes sence & helps. I have also just covered it & left it on the counter.
I do this - if it is a large batch of batter I put it in a tall plastic container with a flip lid - then I pour out what is needed and refridge the rest. I also use this for cupcakes so I don't drip - love those flip top containers.... ![]()

Thanks so much! Do I need to re-mix the batter after it has been in the fridge? Should I let it come to room temp before baking with it again?
I'm just so happy that I don't have to buy more pans!!
Dannysmom - Where do you get your "flip-lid containers?"

I got them at the dollar store 2 in a pack - I think they are slightly larger than one liter. Tall plastic containers with measurements on the side, screw on cap with the flip top thing. I love it because I give it a shake and pour. Straight out of the fridge too, I don't bother with it coming back to room temp.
