Will a 9in round be big enough for 20? I know my 8in round will easily feed 16. I'm thinking a 10in will be too much cake!

According to Earlenes servring chart it will, but I think they would be skinny pieces:

I hear how many slices you can get out of a cake and I'm just amazed. A 9" wouldn't last in my family -- we have 6 people. It would be eaten in one night. I guess with 2 teenage boys and 2 girls that eat just as much as them - that would explain it.

..I agree..I tell customers that a 9" serves 12!

I would agree too!! How do you feed 16 with an 8"!! I think it depends on who you are making the cake for. If it's your family or something where you are cutting the cake (and controlling the serving size) then it may be ok but if it's for someone else then I would make the 10". Just to be on the safe side!

I had looked at earlene's too and that's what got me thinking! Do you think I can get 16 from an 8in because my layers are a full 2in each with a filling? I made a spice pecan cake with cinnamon cream cheese icing for Thanksgiving and had 1/2 the cake left after serving 8. The slices were a decent size. I guess I should clarify-16 is the most I get when I make kind of a heavier cake (like chocolate chocolate chip with ganache icing). I think I need to back up a bit for a normal white cake with a filling!!!

It's so funny-every chart you look at is different!! I think I will go with the 10in just to be safe. It's for a family friend so I'd rather she have left overs!

Thanks guys!

p.s.-Do we have a chart (or a good thread) on here from the pros to help us newer kids? I'm trying to get started with doing more cakes and I always worry about too much vs. not enough!!! icon_smile.gif

...well, keep in mind that everone most likely just ate a huge Thanksgiving dinner.

Funny you should mention that...I have been think about putting together my own serving chart because in "real life" I think the current serving charts are way off.

I would suggest the 10" inch just to be on the safe side.

BTW.... that spice pecan cake and cinnamon cream cheese filling sounds wonderul.

I made my own cutting chart and a 2 layer 9 inch serves 24. The cake is pretty tall by the time you add the filling and icing so you can cut a slender piece and it is substantial. I always ask if food is also being served or are there other desserts also served so I can help them gauge if the 9 inch will be enough. You know, men will want a hunk, women say just a sliver and the kids don't finish their piece. In the end it all evens out.

MrsMissy-the piggies ate off the cake the night before!!! Couldn't get them to wait! I was thinking like VickiC-it's for a party of women that are having their company party at the boss' house and wanted a cake for one of the girls birthday. My cakes are the same way each slice doesn't have to be big to be substantial. But I do think I will make the 10in because she is a very good family friend and I will ask her about the leftover situation! Ah-a plan!

VickiC-would you want to share your chart with us? icon_smile.gif

The spice cake was supposed to be a pumpkin with pecans but I accidentally added too much of the spices and lost the pumpking flavor. I used the crusting cream cheese recipe from here and added cinnamon to taste. It also gave it a really pretty color too.

You're right, all serving charts are different and sometimes they are WAY different! I've been meaning to sit down, trace my pans on a piece of paper and cut it the way I think people will cut it and figure servings out for myself. Everyone is going to be different and it seems that this also varies with our regions. I think if we knew what our OWN servings were then we would feel more comfortable making a certain size for a certain occassion.
Of course, this has been on my to-do list for quite awhile! Someday!! But not before the holidays!
