I'm not new to baking, but am new to using fondant.... I would love to decorate with it, but do most people eat it or peal it off the cake before eating it? I personally don't think it tastes great, but have seen some beautiful cakes decorated with it!

I make mmf. Sometimes I eat it, sometimes not. Sometimes the cake with the fondant is just too sweet for me, othertimes not. Just depends on the mood I am in! My kids love it! I would say though that a lot of people peel it off.

A lot of people in North America are not used to a chewy type icing. Also, most people who have tasted Wilton's premade fondant will peel it off cakes automatically not realizing that there are good tasting fondant's out there. Some people will taste it and decide they will eat it and some people will peel it off and never give it a second thought. It is so much fun to work with though I say have fun and see how you like it. There is always BC under the fondant anyway so if a person chooses to peel it off they will still enjoy their cake!

I like the fondant I make - I use flavor oils just like I would in regular buttercream.

No one that I make a cake for likes the fondant. I've been "instructed" to only use buttercream.

i think it's all a matter of personal taste - how the fondant is flavoured. homemade fondant is definetly tastier and can be flavoured with a variety of oils. personally i love to use rolled buttercream on my cakes. i use a "stiffer" recipe than called for and leave it overnight to cure.
