I have a plastic diamond impression mat. It is sort of a ridgid plastic. I have never used it, but I wondered if it takes some practice to use or would there be a chance I could get it right the first time? I would like to use it on a baby shower cake I am doing, but I dont have a lot of time for practice. If it takes a lot of practice, I wont use it this time!! Any tips? I would be using it on fondant.

It is not too hard, a little practice on a flat piece of icing will help and won't take too long. Once you work out how much pressure is needed to achieve your effect it will be easy.

Consistant pressure is important.

Good Luck

I used mine the first time on a baby shower cake. It was that rigid stuff too. It was a breeze! I did have to go back and re press some places because I was too careful.

Okay, really dumb question here: Say I'm doing a square cake in fondant and want the sides done with this diamond impression. Do I impress the mat on the fondant once it's on the cake or do it first then wrap the cake? I'm thinking to do it once it's on the cake to line up better.

Ok my question is where do you buy your impression mats from? I've seen several cakes w/ the diamond impression...where can I buy this from?

I cant remember where I got mine, but many many places have them. I think I might have gotten mine from cakesbysam or maybe the cakeartpartystore? I am sure most places you check will have it.

Also wondering how does it line up in back? And should you try to 'curve' the mat around or keep it flat and kind of press it around. I know that doesnt make sense+-!

I'm wondering if I might not be better off ordering the dot mat and making my lines for the quilted look using a straight edge ruler. I'm afraid the diamond mat might not give the consistant affect on the side of my cakes, especially if it's made of a stiff plastic. Has anyone done it that way? I have a big anniversary cake job coming up in April and I want to get this down pat before I have to do it for a paid cake.

Both have these. If you live close to a cake shop, call and ask. They usually run in the $5 range.

I love mine! (see pics) A tip or two: for round cakes, DON'T try to bend or curve it around the cake as you press it in. Keep it flat and just sort of roll it around the cake as you go. A bamboo skewer (sold at the grocery store in a bag of 50 or more for about $1) is about the same width as the impression made and can be used to re-press a line or two w/out risking putting the whole mat back on the cake and not getting it lined up right!

Hope that helps,
