Hey fellow cakers.. Does anyone have an idea how to make a leather tooled look for fondant. I want to add to cake for a western look.

I have one in my photos....we took a light tan fondant and then imprinted a design into the sides with a scroll press...and then painted it with a cocoa/oil mixture then wiped it off with a sponge....it worked really neat IMO.

Have you tried checking online? My cake supplier in Evansville IN, in the past, has sold an impression mat that had a look similar to leather.

Not too much help...sorry...it's REALLY early here! LOLL

Think outside of cake supply as well . . . I have found some of my best "cake tools" at home depot. try the paint section where they have impression-type tools for faux painting

This weekend on the Food Network on the show Sugar Rush, A lady was making a wedding cake that was Stacked books, they were leather and she used a scrapbooking stamp to make impressions on the fondant to replicate a leather bound book.

No, she doesn't have a website. NOW, my fav website is beryls.com. You might check that. The shipping is reasonable (as shipping costs go) and you get your product really fast!

Don't know if it will work, but you might try a thick brown paperbag, crumple it up and open it back out. Lightly press it on the fondant and see if this will work. I've used this tecnique on walls to get a leather look, might work on fondant.

Hobby Lobby sells this vinyl fabric that looks like embossed leather, you could try pressing some of that into the icing.

Thanks Sweetcakes I will take a look next time I'm at Hobby Lobby. Sounds like it could work.

I was watching Sugar Rush on the Food Network and one of the cake makers was making a leather bound book and she was using stamps that hadn't been used for anything but food yet. The cake looked so real. She pressed the stamp into the fondant to imprint it like a leather bound book.

Maybe this will help. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks Tris. That was another thought that I had. That could work you would just have to be careful when you are trying to match and not overlap.
