Well I've made a cake mix and served it in the pan, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't count ![]()
So here's my first cake. Its a yellow cake, chocolate buttercream layer underneath, and MMF on top.
I completely screwed up getting the fondant to lay flat on the tall part of the cake, it seemed impossible to get that much extra to lay flat, so I ended up pinching it off and covering it with 'road' fondant to cover the screw up, no one except me would know ![]()
I made the tombstone and road sign from craft wood and the motorcycle and rider is a matchbox toy, I'm just not good enough to even attempt making anything edible for those pieces.
I've never taken a class or anything, I didn't even know they had classes until I went to get the things I needed to make this cake.
Do you think it would be worth taking a class? Anyway, I welcome your feedback!

WHAT!?!?!? this is your first cake ever!!??!?!?? so mad at you.......
no, but really you have great talent. i'm sure everyone loved that cake. ![]()
Great job on your first cake. Your sign made me laugh.
That is great for your first cake
. If you can take some classes go for it. I know they have helped me out a lot. I took the Wilton classes at Michaels and also took some classes at a culinary school. You can never learn too much. Plus its always fun to meet people with the same interests as you.
You should be proud! Not only is it a GREAT cake, your FIRST??? WOW!!! Someone has some talent!!! Amazing job. I'm looking forward to seeing your future creations!
evalea..... you did a GREAT job ! By all means take any classes that you can......... you have probably opened a real can of worms here.......I have a feeling we are going to be seeing ALOT of you and your creations !!! You are going to LOVE decorating !!!
Your cake looks great! Congratulations on a job well done.
Thank you for all your kind words ![]()
I had a lot of mistakes in the cake I had to cover up.
When I say "first" cake, really what you are looking at is in fact cakes 3 and 5... ![]()
Cakes 1 and 2 came out of the oven tasting like baking powder. Cake 3 came out OK, for cake 4 I took it upon myself to use self-rising and sift everything, and a beautiful tasting light and airy cake ensued. That had absolutely no chance of holding up the weight of the hill on it own. So cake 5 was made, as stodgy as possible by not sifting anything and going back to all purpose and a reduced amount of baking powder.
I honestly felt like crying at that point as I hadn't even gotten to decorating yet.
My cake ended a little dry, mostly because I didn't realize I had to keep it wrapped up, it was awesome when it came out the oven. I managed to get a few chocolate buttercream stains on my nice green fondant, because I didn't have any royal icing ready to glue the black fondant on to the white, and in retrospect, my fingers probably weren't the best tool for that particular job
.
My biggest disaster was having a bunch of excess fondant on the corners of the hill part of the cake. It just wouldn't lay flat no matter what I did
So I covered up the hack job of cutting off the excess with black road fondant...
Oh and one more, I did all my road stripe icing first and gave myself no room to lay a template down for the writing, so I had to do it freehand.
I think some classes would be really useful, so much of what I wanted to do, I just didn't know how, and there is only so much you can look up on the net.
I'm going to have to go seek out a class in my area. I just love this site, its so useful and so many talented people in one place! I'm way out of my league, but hopefully I'll learn!
Wow, your first cake and you even had the courage to tackle fondant at the same time
...Super Woman!!!
You did an outstanding job on both...congratulations ![]()

I honestly thought it would be easier to make it look good. I thought it would be really hard to make icing look smooth, and I come from the UK originally, although now I live in the US, and I was all prepared to have to do almond paste/royal icing until I did some research and discovered fondant existed.
I thought buttercream was frosting, the stuff you get in a can, and I've never ever managed to spread that stuff right, so I figured fondant would be easier. I made my own because the premade looked really expensive and I couldn't figure out how to color it. Then everyone said it tasted nasty, so I made MMF instead, cheap and tasty. My ideal combo. Of course I've never seen so much mess in all my life. Powdered sugar EVERYWHERE! Its a good thing birthday boy was around to clean it up for me ![]()
