I Need Help Making Thi' Cake For My Daughter's Baptism

Im very new at cake decorating but I would love to do the cake for my daughters baptism next month. I went to several websites to get ideas and I came across these two that I liked (they are very similar) http://www.jacquespastries.com/alloccasion6.htm and http://www.jacquespastries.com/alloccasion52.htm . Im not trying to make the exact same cake but I would like to know how I can do the dress (either one). I want to try it this weekend.
Socan you guys help me accomplish this? How do I start? What kind of icing should I use? When should I do it?

I agree, I would make the dress out of fondant. It looks like some of the shimmer on the bottom of the dress is coming from white cake glitter. you could also brush on some edible dust of some sort to give it a little shimmer also.

Wow! That is quite the cake! Someone else from here emailed the person who makes the cakes you were looking and and if I remember correctly they said that they do it all in buttercream, freeze it and then carve it...sounds like a lot of work. I think I favour the fondant idea that was suggested.
I remember looking for that 'perfect' cake for my girls baptism as well. My intentions were like yours, to make it myself, however my girls were 11 months old and I barely had time to shower, let alone make a cake! I did find a baker that made exactly what I wanted though, so that was a big help, and it was sooo good too!

Hi Mary...those are beautiful cakes! The dresses look like they are either royal or butter cream. I thought making the dress from fondant would be easier too. I wonder if there might be a mold you could use to get the shape of the dress. You could also use a pattern to cut out the shape of the dress from fondant. After you placed that on the cake, then you could accent it with butter cream (ribbons and ruffles). I looked for some patterns online that I thought might help. Good luck!

Fondant can be easy to work with especially when you're using it to cut out shapes. You'd dust your surfaces with powder sugar and roll it out. Turn it a couple times just to make sure it doesn't stick. You could leave it pretty thick since you're doing a gown. Lay you pattern on top and cut around it.
To me fondant has the texture of taffy and tastes really sweet. Sometimes I think it tastes a bit nutty too. Some people like it, some don't. You'll probably want to peel it off the top of the cake before you serve it. It will make cutting the cake easier.
I like them both MG, if I was to try and do one of these I would go for the second because it looks more simple and since it was for my kid, and I want everything perfect...but I am sure you are a prime choice decorator, and your cake will be perfect!
