Has anyone seen those Direct Buy commercials? Where you become a member and get these fantastic discounts on home improvements/furniture etc.? I'm interested in it, but it seems so secretive, you must attend an open house w/your spouse, no children and they won't tell you the membership fees until you attend. Reminds of a time share hard sell. Is anyone a member or have you attended an open house? Is it worth it?

I was a member of a very similar buying club. Totally not worth it and to be honest we were pretty much scammed legally.

Thanks. Was it the same type of setup where you had to attend an open house before they tell you the cost?

I always laugh when I see those commercials.

There's a couple on there that says they saved $65,000 on cabinets for their house. icon_eek.gif
If they saved that much just on cabinets, then how much did they spend??

I think it's a big scam. I'm always skeptical about those commercials. I wouldn't trust it, IMO if they don't tell you how much it is right away.

Well, I just did a search and read a couple of blogs where people said that the membership is $3500+!!! And of course they don't tell you this until the end of the presentation. What a ripoff!!

I was a member of GSN and yep, had to do the whole open house thing and sign up for $3000. IT was a lot of $ being spent and no follow through on their end at all!!!!!!!!! We were going to remodle our kitchen and bathroom plus get some stuff for my DH's business and instead wasted money. I got in contact practically every week for a few months and never got anywhere till I threatened legal action, not even 24 hours later I get a call. Suprise, suprise icon_rolleyes.gif Well they decided to end the contract and we ONLY icon_mad.gif lost about $2000. No way to get the other $ back either. I would never suggest to anyone to do this ---ever!!!!!!

I was curious about that company too. Then I did some research on the internet about it. Doesn't sound worth it to me!

I have a friend in Houston whose parents belong and they used the membership to get a lot of stuff for the house they built. They haven't had any problems and they've gotten good deals. There are some inconveniences about it, like having to pick up your own stuff, but she's never said they were unhappy. I've wondered about it myself since we're planning on some major remodeling, but I'm always learly about stuff like that. I suppose to it could vary a lot by location. Maybe the Houston location is better, I have no idea.

We called for more info on it just recently. We haven't had a chance to make it to the open house yet. I'm still not sure if I want to spend an 1 1/2 just to go to their open house. Plus they told me that we have to get a baby sitter for our children. They don't allow children in their showroom. I just wish they would tell you all of the pricing stuff up front and not waste your time.

My husband joined UCC about 10 years ago. I believe his membership at the time was about $800. The company has been through many changes since then and I understand the cost to buy in now is a bit pricey. BUT, if you plan on buying any room furnishings or bedding, for example...UCC, or Direct Buy (as they're called now) is a good value. Mattresses and furniture are grossly marked up retail and a nice Simmons Beauty Rest pillowtop that retails for $2000 can be purchased for $800. We purchased chairs for our kitchen at $49 each, when they were $89 retail. So you have to do the math...if you plan on buying a lot of big ticket items, then the membership fee will pay for itself...if not...then don't bother, it's not a good deal. Just my 2 cents...
