I made a non exploding volcano cake for my DS's 4th B-day and added some dinosaurs per his request and it was a great hit! I had the same type of candy lava "shooting" out the top of the cake!

I did a volcano cake once, though it was different from what was listed in that link. I didn't use dry ice as it can be expensive as well as dangerous to tough with bare hands. I did find a link to some instructions on how I made mine:
