Question About Covering Cake In Fondant

After you cover your cake in fondant, are you supposed to cover the cake with something so it doesn't dry out or are you supposed let it air dry and get hard?

I have made a couple of fondant cakes and I have covered it lightly with saran wrap. They have always been just fine.

Overnight, I also cover lightly in saran wrap...but that's just cause I don't want dust or anything likr flruit flies getting on it....

I think the icing layer underneath it will keep it from hardening completely, anyway.

After I cover a cake in fondant, I just put it in a cake box and leave it on the counter.
