Hey all!

I'm new to the cake decorating thing...just trying to learn something new and fun!

I want to make a cake decorated with piped snowflakes on the sides, but I'm not sure what the best thing to use is...royal icing? I know I need to find a template to trace, and then let the snowflakes dry before attaching them...but need help figuring out what to make them with!

Any help is much appreciated!

You could use a snowflake cookie cutter and cut them from fondant. That's what I'd do. I'm always afraid of doing delicate things with royal though.

You can use royal or you can use White chocolate. That is what I'll be doing. Pipe white chocolate out and then paint with silver luster dust.

Do you have the Wilton 2003 Yearbook and Pattern Book? They have a really beautiful cake on there called Shimmering Snowflake Tree. I tried looking for a picture for you but I couldn't find one. I was also looking for a pattern but couldn't get that either. They have the snowflakes made out of royal icing.

I just ordered a snowflake chocolate mold. I thought of using that when I do a cake this Christmas.

I've got about 5 or 6 different patterns if anyone would like them. Just send me your email address. You would need to have some kind of grpahics software or Acrobat reader to open them though.

Also, you can go to wiltons website and do a search for a snowflake patterm and it will bring it up. Then you just download and print it out. They have a lot of patterns posted there from their yearbooks.
