Peanut Butter Recall, Sick Child What To Do?
Lounge By melodyscakes Updated 18 Feb 2007 , 9:27pm by gmcakes
okay, I just read the thread about the recalled peanut butter....and checked, the 6 lb can that I bought for my 6 year old is the 2111
He has been sick all school year, even vomiting at school several times. He vomits quite a bit at home too. he just stayed home from school today because he vomited last night and complained of his stomach hurting.
He is a very picky eater, so he only eats peanut butter sandwhiches every day for lunch, and after school snacks.
he seems to be fine now,
but what should I do? should I take him to urgent care right now? can it wait until morning?
help!

If he's keeping things down now, and I assume sleeping quietly, I'd wait until the morning.
This link has lots of info:

From what they were saying on the news down here is that for most people, it will run its course and eliminate itself from the system (through diarrhea, etc), but they said for those with weakened or weaker immune systems, like the elderly, small children and others with sickness, you should take them to the doctor. I would definitely watch for dehydration, with all of the vomiting. I would probably go to urgent care, definitely tomorrow if the vomiting continues, or if there are signs of dehydration.
From someone who has had salmonella poisoning, take it from me, if your son was in a serious condition, you'd know it. When I had salmonella poisoning I vomited every 15 minutes, no matter where. I was dehydrated and quite gray in my skin color. I spent a few days in the hospital just getting better via IV and sleeping, but even then I was miserable. It was from a bad salad (haha of all things!) I'd had at a restaurant while on vacation with my dad.
Keep an eye on your son and NO MORE PEANUT BUTTER unless it's from a source you know doesn't have a chance of outbreak. If you're still concerned in the morning, take him in. Better safe then sorry really and make sure your little angel is safe and sound. Even if he just has a flu maybe he can be vaccinated and something could be done. You're a mother and have a right to worry about you rboy and I hope he's okay!
There are some people in MO sueing ConAgra because of this. A whole lot people have gotten sick from this peanut butter. I understand that there are accidents, but I think this is a little extreme. The company should have taken more precautions.
We have friends with three kids, all sick from the Peter Pan peanut butter. Youngest is less than 2.
I'd at least call your pediatrician's office, even after hours, they should have a number where you can leave a request for a call back. Let the doctor decide best course of action. I'm not the type to recommend legal action unless it's really waranted, but you might at least talk to an attorney. Save the peanut butter. Not right that your son has had to suffer so long. If you have any medical expenses, they should be responsible, possibly for a bit of pain and suffering too.
Keep us all posted and hope he's ok.

Melody,
Has your child been eating from the same container of peanut butter since the beginning of the school year? If not, then you can only partially attribute the illness to the peanut butter.
If my child would have been vomiting since September, I would have had the physician do a thorough battery of tests, including upper and lower GI's, long ago. Then I would have had him tested for allergies, and insisted that the school check their air and water quality.

I live in Singapore and have not heard of the recall until now.
Now that explains why my entire family, including my 3 year old and 1.5 year old were vomiting, having stomach cramps a month back! And they were running a fever and complaining of stomachaches every now and then.
Thanks to CC, I'm dumping my Peter Pan peanut butter.
goodness, please take him in to the dr. its not normal for a child to vomit so often. better safe then sorry. hes so precious.
but many years ago i did have a day care and one of the little girls would vomit from nerves, it was a habit she got into at a very young age. i felt so bad for her.
oh yeah forgot to mention they said on the news that conagra knew about this since august but were doing their own test to see how wide it was. hoping to save their butts from a huge loss in profits. well they just now released this info and now i think they will be sued by many many people (even those who did not get sick just due to the possibility and then not informing the public) they could stand a real chance of going out of business.
Hi, all!
My DD, 9 y/o, has been sick all week with the "stomach bug", all of the kids in our school are catching it! Anyway, we took her in to the Dr's office on Wednesday, they sent us home told us not to worry, drink plenty of fluids. Then Thursday the Peanut Butter info was announced, I immediately called the Pediatrician's office and explained that I did in fact have some of the peanut butter on hand and she had eaten it. We went back in on Friday, where they did blood tests to confirm that she DID have a virus...NOT salmonella or any of the other food born viruses she might have had.
My Dr's were never suspicious because she did not have all of the symptoms of salmonella, but they did the blood tests for my peace of mind. For anyone that is concerned that their child might have been exposed, the symptoms are: nausea, vomiting, headache, fever and diarrhea (usually bloody...sorry to be so graphic!) If you/your child have any of these symptoms have them checked by your Dr! Hopefully, like me, you will find that is just a virus!
(My daughter finally started eating today...after 7 days and no food and very little to drink!)
