i was hoping to try my hand at torting a cake for my parents' birthdays next week and i was wondering what is the best way to do it? i know about the toothpicks and the leveler (which i think i have, but would have to find), but i was wondering, are there better or easier (or more importantly, more foolproof) ways to do it?

thanks!

I always use a long, serrated knife (a bread knife). I insert the knife and just 'saw' all the way around the cake, without ever removing the knife. This is how I've always done it, and never had problems.

I have converted over to the long, serrated bread knife approach. It does take some eye power, but I've gotten pretty good and can slice evenly. Even on a sheet cake. Floss works great, too!

Good luck!
