Your should put 3 to 4 dowels in the bottom layer cake, depending on its size. The dowels need to be the same height as your bottom layer. You need to put cake board between each tier. Depending on how many tiers you have, you should put one dowel down the center of the entire cake when you are done stacking.

Insert one dowel straight down to the board. Mark your dowel to the exact height of your cake. Use your marked dowel for measure, and cut about 4 to 6 dowels to the same size. That should keep up a 10/12 inch cake from falling into the bottom one. icon_biggrin.gif

I make them long enough to drive them slightly into the foam board base and end up exactly the height of the bottomcake.

Do I just put dowels in the bottom level of the cake? Do I need to cut holes in the cake boards for the central dowel that goes through the whole cake? Do I put the dowels in before I cover with fondant of after?
