I was just wondering... do you prefer a bow made of fondant or a bow made of gumpaste? What is everyone's take on this? Or do you think it doesn't make a difference? Do you think you can roll out the loops of the bow thinner if using gumpaste instead of fondant?

I like using gumpaste better only because it dries quicker and harder.

Same for me, gumpaste. And for the same reasons. Fondant is pretty, but it's softer and takes too long to dry, and you can't roll it as thin as with gumpaste. Even with Tylose added to it, it doesn't seem as strong to me. When they are dried and dusted I don't think you can tell the difference. And a bonus is the fact that gumpaste is lighter in weight when it dries, so if you have to attach a bow on the side of a cake it is less apt to fall or collapse than with fondant.

I think that gumpaste bows look more like ribbon than fondant bows, not only because it can be rolled thinner, but the surface texture when finished is more like fabric to me than fondant is.

What is the opinion on a mixture of half & half gumpaste and fondant..... does it make a bow nicer? icon_rolleyes.gif

My limited experience has been that my fondant bow broke because it was too heavy (not rolled thin enough) and too soft (needed more drying time), and my gumpaste bow dried fast (a couple of hours compared to a couple of days) and held up perfectly.

I have heard that a fondant/gumpaste combination is the best of both worlds though. Maybe someone who's done it that way can confirm?

i usually use half & half.. only because i have a lot of fondant left over and its cheaper than gumpaste.. it works great... i would never do fondant alone.. HOWEVER, that being said.. gumpaste alone is still lighter when it dries and it look more like porceline to me.. i like it very much..

stephanie214 suggested using fixodent powder with the mmf and she says that it works fine...i haven't had a chance to use it myself (it took me forever to find the powder form) but i find just the gumpaste makes the figurine look to crumbly (unless i'm doing something wrong icon_biggrin.gif )
