Question About Products Needed For Wilton Class....

I signed up today to take the Wilton 1 course...it starts on March 6th.
I bought the class kit and book (they said I would get it in class, but wanted to start reading/practicing now). Is there anything else I should buy other than what is in the kit? I was thinking I should buy some type of cake holder since I really have nothing to transport them in. Also, I noticed Wilton had some covered bowls for mixing the icings...would that be a wise investment for the class?
And how in the world do you transport the tiered wedding cake back home once you are finished? I can just see that all over my car!

you will need meringue powder, clear vanilla extract or butter flavoring, or almond for the buttercream recipe
then I would also buy the cake dome you mention, to transport the three cakes you are going to make in the course
and you can buy any tupperware or bowls for less in wal-mart, to mix colors
I think there is a page in the book that mentions what will be require for the class not included in the kit.

The tier cake come apart for transportation,
and you most definetlly use drawer liners for your cakes, They are the foam rolls they sell to put in your kitchen drawers, this prevents the cake from sliding in your trunk
I already owned a covered cake carrier and have used it frequently for small cakes. I found one that snaps on both sides and has a handle for carrying for under $10 at Target. It's made similar to the Wilton one but much less expensive. Having one would be useful for you. If not you could make due with cake boxes and if you are careful you can use the same one several times if you are just using it for yourself.
The covered mixing bowls are great. I have two sets and would probably use a third set if I had it. The lids snap on tightly. I store left over icings in them in the fridge.
The tiered cake I made for course 3 was assemled in class. We took photos and then it was disasembled to take home. It was on pillars so it was no big deal to take it apart. If you are stacking the tiers and use a center dowel rod you should be able to transport it home without any problems. Make sure you buy some of the non-slip shelf liner and lay it on the floor or trunk of your car. It will keep your cake from sliding around (unless you slam on the brakes or take some sharp turns, LOL).

I just finished course 1 and here are some things that I found handy:
1. disposable piping bags
2. extra couplers
3. ziploc bags and the rubbermaid or ziploc containers (for taking buttercream to class and then back home)
4. an extra rose tip
we did not make a wedding cake. I think that is in course 3. we made the rainbow, clown and roses.

You can fit three cakes in that dome? I guess I just don't remember it being that big.

Did you use any other size tips in class other than what they gave you in the kit, or are those the ones they want you to stick with?
LOL. I think she meant you could use the dome for each of the three cakes you make during course 1. Just one cake at a time.
I don't recall using any other tips. You should be okay with what comes in the kit. Later on you will probably find it helpful to have multiples of certain tips so if you are using different colors of icings you don't have to keep washing the tip to switch colors.
Invest in the tool box to carry your tips and other supplies to class. It's worth it!

I'm excited, but nervous about taking the class. I look at all the cakes in the CC Gallery and I wonder if I could ever be that creative. I never knew there was so much to actually making a cake the proper way. Then there is the icing and decorating to think about.

I am in the middle of course 2, and agree with all of the other posters. If you're planning to take all 3 courses, these will be investments you'll definitely want to make-
* "trim & turn" is so impt!
* scissors
* toothpicks
* meringue powder
* find good confectioner's sugar on sale and stock up!
* larger, angled icing spatula
* cake carrier
* cake leveler
* big box of 100 disposable decorating bags- I bought 20 thinking it would be plenty and have had to replenish several times.
* pack of 4 couplers- you'll use them!
* icing gel colors- just buy a whole set, if you can afford it- but at least 4, including green, yellow & pink
* I had an old "caboodle" at home that was the right size for carrying everything- I just bought the tip storage box to go inside. But some sort of carrying container would be a good idea. Grocery bags didn't cut it after the first 2 weeks.
* You can use any containers with a lid to transport and mix icing. My mis-matched gladware and tupperware have worked fine.
