What's the deal here?

I have an IMBC wedding cake for Saturday and thought I'd try the iron-the-wax-paper to the ribbon idea to stop the grease staining, and of course, nothing happens when I iron over it. What am I missing? All I get is hot waxed paper but nothing sticky about it.

Anyone actually done this...I have the strips all cut, and I'll just place them between the ribbon and the cake if I have to...but geez, I wanted that to work.

help...

I don't want to do the "pregrease" thing because I don't want the ribbon any darker.

thanks in advance!

I either apply the wax paper strips directly to the cake, then lay the ribbon overtop.....or I make a strip of coloured fondant to go around the cake instead....or I go to a florist's shop and buy the waterproof ribbon off them instead. It comes in lots of shades and it's perfect!!

I have used clear contact paper on the back of ribbon before to protect it from the icing. It's sticky on one side so it adheres quickly to the ribbon and then I used a little buttercream on the other side of the contact paper as glue to attach it to the cake. HTH

Do a test overnight with a spread of BC (let it crust over) and lay a piece of the ribbon on top of it to see if anything bleeds through. I use satin ribbon all the time and never have a problem with bleeding through. The florist type ribbon (sort of feels rough) does bleed through. I hope you will be surprised tomorrow morning and find it works without the wax paper.

Thanks; I'll try your ideas.

I should also point out that I'm an IDIOT.

I was being all smart and planning ahead last night and pre-cut my lengths of ribbon so they're ready to go for tomorrow. WELL. I wrapped them around the cake pans and gave myself a bit (NOT much) of overlap, and *snip snip*.

DUH icon_eek.gif I didn't allow for the depth of icing that will be ON the cakes...so now I'll probably have an inch gap at the back where I have to cover it with a patch of leftover ribbon, because I was just at the store and didn't see any ribbon even close to this color to buy over again.

ARGH!

Could you make a rose or some flower the same color as ribbon, to cover the gap?

I've covered the back of mine with the wide clear box tape once when I was worred about the color.

Hi homecook! You want to use freezer paper to iron on the ribbon...wax paper won't work. Place the ribbon on the shiny side of the freezer paper then iron on. thumbs_up.gif

Thanks for all the ideas...I like the flower idea--I may have to do that. It will have fresh flowers, so that could be the ticket.

Wish I'd planned the ribbon cutting thing a little better icon_mad.gif --sometimes you can OVERprepare, lol
