Hi. I can not find the foil to cover cake boards anywhere near I live. I was wondering, could I use gift wrapping paper to cover the board? When I place the cake on the board it is always on another board anyway. Thanks!!
I think many people here, myself included, use wrapping paper to cover a cake board, then we cover the paper with clear contact paper so that the grease doesn't seep into the wrapping paper. It makes a nice presentation.
I prefer to use wrapping paper covered with contact paper. I also like to cover the board with MMF. I stopped using the foil a long time ago. It was too expensive. If you really want foil you can use the florist foil if it is available. Some are hesitant to use it because it isn't food grade.
i find the different colors of contact paper at dollar stores workd great I even cut out pictures in mags and cover with clear contact paper to match the type of cake going on it.
This is not as attractive an option, but I use freezer paper. It is plain, but the grease won't soak into it, and it doesn't call attention to the cake board. But then, I'm a hobbyist, so I don't keep a lot of supplies in the house. I always have freezer paper!
another"A-HAAA!" moment for me here! i've been doing caes for 5 years and have always used florist foil why? no idea.... it always aggravated me when i get a small tear in the foil on the edge!!! not sure why it makes me so crazy but it does.... now that i have read this thread, i will move on to covering in less expensive ways!!!!!
*feels like a ding dong*
this is an interesting thread..

will have to think about contact paper now I guess... I know the table cloths I use don't show grease... I just liked how thhe clear contact pulled it tighter.
another option is always fondant... I did my first cake a couple weeks ago covered in fondant.. harder than I thought LOL but I liked the look.
Reese 04,
I use my good old big wooden rolling pin on the MMF for the board and make it very thin. If you go around the edge it even cuts it away from the board. If you use the MMF fresh and soft it is nothing to cover a board. Enjoy!
I use contact paper as well for greasy looking reasons!! LOL
I usually put it over 97 cent plastic table cloths from walmart.. one table cloth will cover a bunch of cake boards!
That is a really good idea I would of never thought of that!
Thank y'all so much! I have some good ideas now. Could someone tall me what freezer paper is? Scoobam, you said that you use plactic table cloths from Wal-Mart, what type of table cloth? Thanks again!
In their party goods section (usually by the greeting cards) they have a little area with plastic table cloths in all different colors for 97 cents each. I just cut off a piece to size.. and they go a long way. Red I had to double up because one layer made it look pink.. but other than that a single layer has done it.
You can also find the same type of tablecloths at a dollar store usually.
hope that helps! ![]()
