Ok so I was eating a pint of ben & jerry's the other night and since I've always got cake on the brain ( thanks a lot cake central icon_wink.gif I had an idea.
I thought, I wonder if I can make a really big cupcake in this thing, it seemed like the perfect shape and size. I've noticed a lot of tiered birthday cakes lately with a big cupcake as the topper, usually carved or shaped out of a smaller cake pan, so I thought this would be perfect for that.

So I cleaned out the container, and filled it about 2/3- 3/4 full of cake batter, and baked it ( set it in a cake pan for stability )
It worked! Here are the pictures of the process, I really roughly decorated it ,so it doesn't look pretty, I just wanted to test the idea really.

P.S.- The date on my camera is wrong, these are from today.

That is a good idea...too bad I'd gain 100 pounds eating all of the ice cream to make a bunch of these icon_lol.gif

Cool! I just bought a "king size" Wilton muffin pan at Michael's. It makes really big cupcakes, but I think they're still smaller than a pint of Ben & Jerry's.

Hey, great idea! Yeah, you know you're an addict when everything you look at becomes either a cake pan, cake plate, or a decoration for a cake!

That is an excellent idea! I never thought you can put the ice cream container in the oven. I should get my favorite flavor: Phish Food! Thanks for sharing your idea.

Did you do anything special to keep the cake from sticking to the container when it was done?

No I didn't do anything special to the carton first. I just greased it up pretty good with some cake release like I would any pan. icon_smile.gif

That's great. We are always thinking aren't we? I visited my son at work (he works at an art supply store) and I was going crazy looking at the different tools that I could use on cakes. Crazy!

Which only goes to prove my theory that cake decorators are the Mother Of Invention! Or maybe Fathers.

What a great idea . . . I love it! But isn't the Ben and Jerry's container paper? What keeps it from burning??

This is all I could find online about the containers : " unbleached paperboard container. The ECO-pint kraft paper containers are brown on the inside with a non-toxic white coating on the outside "

So I guess the coating might help it not to burn ? I'm not sure but it didn't burn or even seem remotely like it might in my oven.
We put paper baking cups in the oven all the time with cupcakes and they don't burn, so I assumed that it would be ok thumbs_up.gif

Subaru,
You cracked me up with your post because I agree with you about looking at EVERYTHING as a cake idea. I'm very into digitizing on my sewing machine and there isn't a single embroidery shirt in the stores or wording out there that I don't view as a digitizing project, and now I see everything as a cake! Too funny. Glad I'm not the only one like this!

Instead of eating all that ice cream and gaining all those pounds, I wonder if a stainless steel cup would work?? http://jas-townsend.com/images/large/s-3010.jpg Hmmm....

I think that is a great idea. I was just wondering about the fumes from the paint on the carton and if the heat would cause the paint to catch fire. Just a thought, but not as good a thought as what you had!!
